Niemeyer became world renowned for planning and building the capital Brasilia, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. His buildings are deeply respectful of the site and are characterized by an unmistakable, almost Baroque design impulse. He was highly prolific up until his death (2012) and is one of the most productive architects in history. This second edition has a new preface and updated biography and list of works.

This book explores a central theme of Niemeyer's work: a reflection of the Brazilian jeito, a supple and improvisational style manifested in everything from the country's sensual, undulating landscape to its attraction to spontaneous impulses, best known through its vibrant music and dance. The jeito and the milieu of Rio de Janeiro are at the heart of Niemeyer's style of free-form, which emphasises the inherent plasticity of the native curve over the rigid Style in Europe. A second theme brought to light in the book is Niemeyer of the poetic influence of Le Corbusier. Also deliberated in the volume is Niemeyer's attraction to surrealist biomorphic forms and his desire to express a sense of the fantastic in architecture. A final theme examined is Niemeyer's search for an aesthetic utopia that would resolve social dilemmas by wishing them away through architecture.

Dutch photographer Erik van der Weijde uses a simple book of full-page, black-and-white photographs without text to present architect Oscar Niemeyer's monumental work in the modernist city of Brasília. These images of the so-called utopian city are stark and carefully devoid of people. In this way, Van der Weijde chooses for a clear focus on the structures and urban spaces, lending the series an architectural purity and imparting some of the grand scale of the city, perhaps even agreeing with the critics who have referred to it as dehumanising and full of elegant monotony--Publisher description.

Of all of the Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyers many built works, his Algerian projects are among the least well known. Beginning in 1968, Algerias President Houari Boumediene commissioned Niemeyer to build two universities and an Olympic sports hall, as well as a series of large-scale, never-realized projects across Algeria, in an attempt to forge a modernist, independent nation. In 2013, Jason Oddy produced an in-depth photographic survey of these buildings as they exist in Algeria today. The Revolution Will Be Stopped Halfway collects those images alongside archival documents and Oddys further research into Niemeyers Algerian work in order to explore the revolutionary politics that inspired and formed these buildings.

In this informal, fluid autobiography, Niemeyer reveals that philosophy, politics and his many passions - including his large family, many friends, the sensuous land and open skies of Brazil, the female body, art and literature - have formed the key to his architecture and to his vibrant life. This volume provides readers with an unprecedented entrée into the life of one of this century's most influential architects : Oscar Niemeyer. It includes notes identifying the people and places cited in the narrative, a chronology of Niemeyer's career, a selection of archival photographs and forty sketches created by Niemeyer especially for this book.
