Brussels-based 51N4E deals with matters of architectural design, concept development, and strategic spatial transformations. Headed by Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn, the office was founded in 1998 and aspires to contribute to social and urban transformation. This book - part photo-novel, part real-life journey - tells the story of 51N4E in multiple ways. Combining short stories by Falma Fshazi with photographs by Stefano Graziani, it is a narrative of discovery and embracing otherness, as well as a retrospective look at projects since 2004. It describes the encounters and processes by which the architects learned to operate in a culture and context very different from their own.

Embedded in politically and economically charged sites in the Pearl River Delta, Mongolia, and the European Union, 51N4E (Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn) and Rural Urban Framework (Joshua Bolchover and John Lin) operate in expanded ecologies of architectural practice, questioning the role of the architect today. By collaborating with policymakers, local contractors, and NGOs, and by engaging their respective labs at ETH Zürich and the University of Hong Kong as key research locations, both offices investigate new forms of cooperation and dialogue as crucial strategies for design. 51N4E and RUF work at the seams of urbanization, with projects situated in transitional settlements in Ulaanbaatar, the rural regions of China, the transforming neighborhoods of Brussels, and Albania’s shifting public spaces. This publication compares their research and design processes in order to question the extents and certainties of architecture against backdrops of indeterminate notions of citizenship, unstable stages of urbanization, and insecure economies and ecologies.

The second issue of the Chapters series focuses on the question of how design processes can be shaped through dialogue to give different actors the opportunity to add, remove or change something in an attempt to exceed the expectations of everyone involved. The first part of the book investigates the work of Brussels-based architecture firm 51N4E and two design-focused consulting firms, endeavour from Antwerp and Denkstatt from Basel. All three companies explore the boundaries of architecture, advocating openness and dialogue with clients and users rather than the autonomy and monologue typical of many architects and urban designers. Digesting the firms’ work and probing for patterns, this book seeks to explain the craft and organizational processes that drive this design approach.A second part of the publication examines the hidden presence of this “design in dialogue” approach in a wide range of European architecture firms and their projects—not as a new methodology to study, but as a liberating attitude to share, cherish, and develop. Reflecting on these undertakings illustrates the way design in dialogue can create a productive momentum and foster engagement. With projects by Harder Haas, Atelier Bow-Wow, Lacol, Studio Paola Viganò, Equip 10+1, Onkruid, Caruso St John Architects, and Communitism.

Peter Swinnen, Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn call themselves 51N4E, a name that refers to the geographic coordinates of their place of business, located in Brussels, Belgium. The somewhat immodest subtitle that underscores their cryptic collective moniker--Space Producers--has been justified by their transformations of dwelling spaces, their recent renovation of the Groeninge Museum in Bruges, and their most important commission to date, the conversion of an old brewery in Mechelen into a cultural center. One of the most talented and promising architecture bureaus in northern Europe, their collective has recently been awarded the prestigious Maaskant Prize for young architects, the most important prize in the Netherlands. Recent winners include Liesbeth van der Pol, Neutelings Rietdijk, and Adriaan Geuze--all Dutch, as you can see. 51N4E are the first non-Dutch winners ever. In recognition of this honor, 51N4E is being treated to a first monograph; Space Production will present a complete overview of the bureau's work, accompanied by essays about their distinctive design ideas.

Many architects and engineers today believe that the most sustainable building is the one that is never demolished. The third edition of the Chapters series developed by the Belgian architecture firm 51N4E therefore tells the story of the transformation of two office towers from the 1970s according to the principles of reduce-reuse-recycle. Against all odds, the former World Trade Center in Brussels will be repurposed in a previously unimaginable way. After many years of vacancy, the building now stands for a new approach to urban development and becomes a showcase for dealing with building fabric from the 1970s that is threatened with demolition, in a more sustainable way. This publication tells the story of the unlikely journey to obtain the building permit, tracing the events that led to this new lease of life. Starting from the initial dream of dismantling the World Trade Center, it recounts the complex and layered process that shaped the innovative adaptive-reuse project called ZIN. Even if the circular, spatial, and material setup is unique to the project, the concepts and the processes behind it are not. By breaking down the complexity of its components, we can understand what has happened, and—more importantly—what could happen to other buildings as well. That is the reason this publication bares witness: to learn how to not demolish a building.
