Abstract

"The study of 'subjective wellbeing' has seen explosive growth in recent decades, opening important new discourses in personality and social psychology, happiness economics, and moral philosophy. Now it is moving into the policy domain. In this it has arguably overstepped its limits. The shallow theoretical base of subjective wellbeing research, the limitations of its measurement instruments, and its ethical naivety makes policymaking on the basis of its findings a risky venture. The present volume is an attempt to shore up these weaknesses and set subjective wellbeing scholarship on a course for several more decades of growth and maturation. It presents a theory of subjective wellbeing in two parts. The first is the subjective wellbeing production function-a model of wellbeing as outcome. The second is the coalescence of being-a model of the self-actualisation process by which wellbeing is achieved. This two-part model integrates ideas from subjective wellbeing studies with complementary ideas in analytical and continental philosophy, clinical, moral, and developmental psychology, and welfare economics. Importantly, this theory is ethically sensitive, bridging the gap between the philosophical and psychological perspectives on wellbeing in a way that illuminates the complexities facing the application of subjective wellbeing in public policy. The book also provides a thorough review of various ways in which subjective wellbeing can be studied empirically, and the hard trade offs we face between long surveys that capture the richness of the concept and the parsimony required by social surveys and policy analysis"--

Abstract

The concept of well-being is one of the oldest and most important topics in philosophy and ethics, going back to ancient Greek philosophy. Following the boom in happiness studies in the last few years it has moved to centre stage, grabbing media headlines and the attention of scientists, psychologists and economists. Yet little is actually known about well-being and it is an idea that is often poorly articulated. The Routledge Handbook of Philosophy of Well-Being provides a comprehensive, outstanding guide and reference source to the key topics and debates in this exciting subject. Comprising over 40 chapters by a team of international contributors, the Handbook is divided into six parts:- well-being in the history of philosophy- current theories of well-being, including hedonism and perfectionism- examples of well-being and its opposites, including friendship and virtue and pain and death- theoretical issues, such as well-being and value, harm, identity and well-being and children- well-being in moral and political philosophy- well-being and related subjects, including law, economics and medicine.Essential reading for students and researchers in ethics and political philosophy, it is also an invaluable resource for those in related disciplines such as psychology, politics and sociology.

Abstract

Abstract

The literary arts represent and provoke experiences of understanding and emotion, and this open access study examines how the practical pursuit of well-being in healthcare reveals purposes at the core of our engagements with and understanding of literature itself. During the past twenty years, much admirable work in the "health humanities" has focused upon what studies of literature contribute to the understandings and the practical work--the "worldly work"--of healthcare. Such a project aims at developing healthcare practitioners who bring greater care to those who come to them ailing or in fear or faced with terrible suffering. Literary Studies and Well-Being turns this inside out by examining the intergenerational caretaking of healthcare in a manner which allows us to comprehend the nature and discipline of literary studies in new ways. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by The University of Oklahoma. Chapter 1: Thesis and Contexts -- Chapter 2: Introduction: On the Discipline of Literary Studies -- Chapter 3: Disciplined Knowledge and the Experience of Meaning -- Chapter 4: The Nature of Value and the Nature of Language -- Chapter 5: The Discipline of Death -- Chapter 6: Action and Ethics in Literary Studies -- Works Cited.

Abstract

The Nordic Action Plan for Children and Young Adults in the Adjacent Areas was launched in 1999 in order to contribute to an improvement of the living conditions of young risk groups in the Baltic states and North-West Russia. More than 400 small and large projects have received funding from the programme since then. The present evaluation of the programme has been carried out by the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR). The evaluation team recommends a continuation of the programme founded on its achievements in focusing on risk groups, keeping a cross-sectoral approach, involving the policy level in the adjacent area countries, emphasising competence transfer and capacity building, and stimulating an interest in Nordic approaches and models in work with the risk groups. At the same time the evaluators suggest that in the future more emphasis should be put on a further institutionalisation of the programme, it should be used more actively to build partnerships in the region, more attention should be paid to the human resources in the projects, and dissemination activities should be given a more prominent place.

Abstract

Healthy eating and physical activity are for any person essential elements to promote health and quality of life. It is the overall ambition of the Nordic Council of Ministers to promote good health and quality of life on equal terms for all Nordic citizens. However, studies indicate that the development is going in the wrong direction with unhealthy eating habits, physical inactivity and overweight becoming increasingly more endemic. This does not only threaten the quality of life of the individual but also the economy of society. The Nordic Council of Ministers have therefore adopted a common Nordic Plan of Action in order to support the initiatives already taken by the individual Nordic countries with regards to promoting healthy eating and physical activity and preventing overweight. The Plan of Action contains common Nordic ambitions for the development in dietary habits, physical activity and prevalence of overweight to be reached by 2011. In addition the plan contains preliminary visions for status in 2021. The Plan of Action includes common areas of priority to reach the ambitions and specifically singles out 3 main areas for a closer Nordic cooperation: Development of common methods for monitoring efforts to promote healthy eating and physical activity. Increased sharing of knowledge on the effects of existing initiatives and later also cooperation on "best practice". Research and development of methods. The Plan of Action also constitutes a common Nordic contribution to the international efforts for prevention of overweight and promotion of healthy lifestyle.
