In this book, Gabriel Zuchtriegel explores and reconstructs the unwritten history of Classical Greece - the experience of nonelite colonial populations. Using postcolonial critical methods to analyze Greek settlements and their hinterlands of the fifth and fourth centuries BC, he reconstructs the social and economic structures in which exploitation, violence, and subjugation were implicit. He mines literary sources and inscriptions, as well as archaeological and data from excavations and field surveys, much of it published here for the first time, that offer new insights into the lives and status of nonelite populations in Greek colonies. Zuchtriegel demonstrates that Greece's colonial experience has far-reaching implications beyond the study of archaeology and ancient history. As reflected in foundational texts such as Plato's 'Laws' and Aristotle's 'Politics', the ideology that sustained Greek colonialism is still felt in many Western societies.

La Casa dei Vettii è senza dubbio una delle case più celebri di Pompei e del mondo romano. Ubicata nell'Insula 15 della Regio VI, è inserita nel quadrante nord-occidentale della città, all'interno di un quartiere che ospita varie domus di un certo prestigio. Portata in luce tra il mese di agosto del 1894 ed il giugno 1895, sotto la direzione di Antonio Sogliano, è nota per la ricca e ben conservata decorazione pittorica e per lo splendido arredo scultoreo del giardino. I numerosi interventi di restauro che si sono susseguiti nel tempo, a partire dagli interventi realizzati già durante gli scavi, possono costituire esempi paradigmatici del mutare della percezione dell'antico e dell'evoluzione delle tecniche e dell'approccio metodologico al restauro dalla fine del secolo XIX ai nostri giorni. La realizzazione del progetto ha rappresentato un complesso esercizio alla ricerca di un equilibrata armonia tra antico, moderno e contemporaneo, con una proiezione, per quanto concerne la tecnologia utilizzata per l'illuminazione, in un futuro sostenibile tanto spesso enunciato ma ancora poco realizzato, avendo sempre presente la priorità ed il rispetto per l'antico.
