Abstract

Vladimir Propp (1895-1970) was born into a German-speaking family in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and is best known for his structural analysis of Russian folktales, which was first published in 1928 in his first book, Morfologjia skaski (translated as Morphology of the Folktale in 1958 and then again in 1968). His work on identifying the key components of narrative greatly impacted writers, linguists, and literary scholars. This entry begins with an overview of Propp's professional biography, including a look at the early study of plot construction. The next two sections examine Propp's concepts of the plot function and character network.
