This is the first ever manual to system­atically delve into the zoo as an archi­tectural typology. German architect Natascha Meuser examines five generations of zoological structures in order to show that the ­architecture of zoos has always incorporated social values, fostering the coexistence of humans and animals, ever since the opening of the first scientifi­cally run zoo. The manual presents doc­umentation of thirty historical, pioneering zoo buildings that set new standards regarding both function and aes­thetics. Moreover, it offers an in-­depth analysis of fifty international zoos that have been built over the last twenty years. It includes to­-scale floor plans, elevations, and sections, as well as large photos that offer previously unseen insights. The author also presents ten design parameters that can serve as guidelines for the plan­ning of a zoological ­structure.

During the Covid-19 pandemic we have been forced to retreat into private shelters and to question the limits of residential typologies. The villa is an obvious example of such a shelter. It has reemerged as an object of desire, because of the urge to escape the boundaries of our own four walls. Throughout history this typology has been rethought and reinvented by architectural greats who sought to break radically with the tradition of their times. But what does it mean to us to design a villa during a period of isolation and lockdown? The answer is not clear. The villa has always been both a dream home for clients and a means of expression for architects. It combines architecture's most primitive function - to create a liveable shelter - with an architect's endeavour to manifest their ideology in a single building. During an online design studio held at the Dessau School of Architecture, students from ten countries discussed the identities of the villa and their cultural context. The design of private shelters helped to overcome the paralysis of public life. This publication showcases some of the next generation's most promising ideas. Moreover, it aims to explore new methods for online teaching, which could serve as a reference for institutions in a post-COVID world.

Designing a childcare facility, whether it is a créche, kindergarten, or preschool, involves many challenges. The architect must focus on the needs of the users, who include both the children and the adult carers, while complying with a large number of rules and regulations, which are made all the more complex by the fact that they rarely reference buildings for children explicitly. But above all, the architect must create structures that optimally meet the contemporary pedagogical and architectural requirements of an institution dedicated to children. This is the first manual specially dedicated to the long-neglected kindergarten building typology. It presents 60 contemporary childcare buildings from across the world in detail, with large photos, plans, and drawings, providing deep insights into what is an exceedingly complicated design task. Moreover, the book outlines ten design parameters that architects can turn to for guidance.
