Abstract

Pirro Ligorio’s Worlds brings renowned Ligorio specialists into conversation with emerging young scholars, on various aspects of the artistic, antiquarian and intellectual production of one of the most fascinating and learned antiquaries in the prestigious entourage of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The book takes a more nuanced approach to the complex topic of Ligorio’s ‘forgeries’, investigating them in relation to previously neglected aspects of his life and work.

Abstract

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is one of the most celebrated artists of the Spanish Baroque era. Though known primarily for his religious paintings, he also created iconic genre paintings, portraits, and narrative works. Basing his practice on direct observation, he anchored his paintings-wether scenes of the Holy Family or young beggars on the Sevillian streets-in reality. This beautiful publication showcases more than fifty works that demonstrate his skill in conveying the cultural narratives of his time. Essays by distinguished scholars explore Murillo's art in the context of diversity in the city of Seville and through the lenses of antiquity, northern culture, and portraiture. Through this innovative examination, Murillo's astonishing ability to challenge the boundaries between sacred and secular, heaven and earth, is revealed.
