Abstract

Detached houses are considered primarily responsible for urban sprawl and land consumption. At the same time they represent the ideal residence for broad sections of society. This contradiction was used as the starting point for the Institut Urban Landscape at the ZHAW to take a closer look at detached housing. From the different perspectives of architects and social scientists, as well as photographer Heinrich Helfenstein, different detached house settlements were at the focus of examination. Instead of the often deplored detached house without properties, a surprisingly multifaceted settlement reality with great potential for identification discloses itself. This work focuses on the specific qualities and unused potentials of the phenomenon and yields new insights and perspectives for a sustainable development of urban landscapes in architecture and urbanism.

Abstract

Abstract

Post-war residential developments across Europe, which make up the majority of housing stock, are under pressure to develop further. How to deal with those dwellings has thus become one of the core questions on building among existing building stock. Most of them are in need of renovation and, due to their urban composition, are accompanied by large open spaces, which seem to provide easily developable structures. At the same time, these developments and quarters are valuable historic witnesses. Densification efforts should therefore always allow for the overall composition of the development. For the first time, this workbook offers planners and historic preservationists as well as municipalities, city administrations, cooperatives, clients and owners a comprehensive guide to preserving the qualities of post-war residential developments due for densification. In its analysis, it also considers aspects of landscape planning, socio-politics and the conservation of historic gardens.Using selected, extensively documented case studies of densifications as well as densification experiments for yet to be densified developments, the editors show that inner-city densification is possible even when considering building culture, built heritage and commemorative values. The publication shows procedures for a mindful definition of individual conservation goals that can serve as guidelines in the course of planning densification. Therefore, it not only offers valuable assistance in recognizing and maintaining the individual and often unique character of a residential development, but also presents planning criteria that allow for a meaningful densification.

Abstract

The urban morphology investigates settlement and urban forms. These do not change overnight, but in a process that follows certain principles. There is hardly anything more complex and contradictory than a city. Precisely because of this complexity, there is little agreement on definitions and procedural methods. This applies in particular to urban planning, which is not only concerned with analysis, but also with the design and transformation of cities. A variety of different urban morphological approaches exist today. The authors from the areas of research and practice investigate the relevance of the morphological perspective in the field of contemporary urban landscapes. They link historical roots and current approaches and explain the relationship between analysis and design.

Abstract

With its handy format, understandably written text and careful selection of descriptive and comprehensibly adapted examples, our Handbook of Methods is a helpful manual for students, architects and urban planners in teaching andpractice. It discusses the following methods :- Overall urban design concept - Scenario - Test planning - Photography - Model - Mapping - Sectional view - Diagram - Morphology. Although the design process as such may initially seem less systematic and organised, methods are the all-important basis of design practice in architecture and urban design. Moreover, they can help to decipher the frame conditions of planning beyond the design process in order to derive strategies for successful implementation. In that context, our Handbook is designed to enable two levels of reading: to provide a basic understanding of the role of methodology in architecture and urban design on the one hand, and a comprehensible explanation of a broad rangeof methods and their specific area of application supported by concrete examples on the other.By doing that, we hope to help designers understand their own actions and provide tools that will assist them in the design process at the same time.
