"11 papers which focus on the process of textile manufacture, the weaving process itself, and the materiality of fabric. Contributions address the problematic issues of cognitive archaeology, consumer research, literary theory and themes addressing both philosophical history and the history of reception of ideas and practice. The contributions seek both to close the critical gaps with respect to weaving, a broad and complex field in the area of ancient cultural techniques, and to identify new themes. Accordingly, the submissions expand our focus into late antiquity, to integrate texts such as letters written on Papyrus detailing the everyday correspondence of an Egyptian family or to spotlight the meaning of textile terms and the history of misunderstandings associated therein. Frequently overused analogies between writing and weaving are also examined in terms of their legitimacy as well as their limits. Die Leistungen der spätantiken Philosophin Hypatia in Wissenschaft, Philosophie und in der Öffentlichkeit Alexandrias beeindruckten ihre Zeitgenossen. Autoren beleuchteten die Persönlichkeit und das Wirken der gelehrten Frau vom ausgehenden vierten bis ins sechste Jahrhundert. Ihnen verdankt sich eine vielstimmige Hypatia-Rezeption im wissenschaftlichen Diskurs, in der Literatur und jüngst auch im Film. Die griechischen sowie die lateinische Quelle zu Hypatia werden in dieser Studie vorgelegt, übersetzt und mit historisch-philologischer Genauigigkeit sowie nach textwissenschaftlichen Kriterien erstmals systematisch analysiert. Die Autorin legt Wert auf die kontextuelle Interpretation der sehr unterschiedlichen Quellen, zu denen u.a. literarische Briefe, ein Epigramm sowie Berichte in Philosophie- und Kirchengeschichte zählen. Anhand von intertextuellen Bezügen erhellt das Buch, in welche Traditionen sich die Texte zu Hypatia einreihen. Vorherrschende, stereotypisierte Zuschreibungen an die Philosophin werden hinterfragt. Ausgehend von der Prämisse, dass Texte Wirklichkeit herstellen, nimmt die Studie die Frage auf, welche Vorstellungen und Bilder Hypatias die spätantiken Autoren entwerfen.

Im August 2010 jährte sich zum 1600. Mal die Plünderung Roms durch den Gothen Alarich. Dieses Ereignis wurde von Paganen und Christen gleichermassen zu einem Weltereignis stilisiert und fand ein vielfältiges Echo in zeitgenössischer und späterer Literatur. Dieser Sammelband analysiert die Bewertung dieses Falls Roms aus textwissenschaftlicher, historischer und theologischer Perspektive interdisziplinär bis ins hohe Mittelalter, unter Berücksichtigung des Rückblicks der späteren Byzantiner sowie ausgewählter Reaktionen der lateinischen und volkssprachigen Literatur im Westen. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass viele Kulturträger in ein "Netzwerk" integriert waren, sei es Rom bejahend oder auch in skeptischer bis ablehnender Distanz. Diese unaufgelöste Spannung führte dazu, dass die "Katastrophe" von 410, obgleich historisch von relativ geringer Bedeutung, enorme literarische Kräfte mit dem Ziel der mentalen Identitätsbestimmung freisetzte.
