Abstract

Remote Instrumentation and Virtual Laboratories focuses on all aspects related to the effective exploitation of remote instrumentation; on making instrumentation fully integrated into the e-Science scenario by considering middleware, networking, and metrological aspects; and the building of complex virtual laboratories on top of real devices and infrastructures. These include SOA and related middleware, high-speed networking in support of Grid applications, wireless Grids for acquisition devices and sensor networks, Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for real-time control, measurement instrumentation and methodology, as well as metrology issues in distributed systems. The activities generally termed "e-Science" encompass a wide range of scientific disciplines. It is characterized by highly intensive computation on huge data sets in a large-scale distributed environment, by the real-time interaction and collaboration among many scientists working on a specific problem or data set worldwide, and by the use of specific instrumentation—the pieces of equipment physically producing the data that pertain to a certain experiment. In addition to remote instrumentation, this book also addresses new challenges that will arise from wireless access, wireless sensor networks, and the traversal of heterogeneous network domains.

Abstract

Making scientific instruments a manageable resource over distributed computing infrastructures such as the grid has been a key focal point of e-science research in recent years. It is now known by the generic term ‘remote instrumentation’, and is the subject of this useful volume that covers a range of perspectives on the topic reflected by the contributions to the 2010 workshop on remote instrumentation held in Poznań, Poland. E-science itself is a complex set of disciplines requiring computationally intensive distributed operations, high-speed networking, and collaborative working tools. As such, it is most often (and correctly) associated with grid- and cloud-computing infrastructures and middleware. The contributions to this publication consider broader aspects of the theme of remote instrumentation applied to e-science, as well as exploring related technologies that enable the implementation of truly distributed and coordinated laboratories. Among the topics discussed are remote instrumentation and sensors' infrastructure, virtual laboratories and observatories, architectural middleware elements, advanced grid and cloud computing, virtual machines, and software platforms. As the potential fruits of distributed e-science enquiry expand, this book enables researchers in the sector to keep abreast of very latest developments.

Abstract

Grid Enabled Remote Instrumentation stems from the 2nd Workshop on Distributed Cooperative Laboratories - Instrumenting the Grid (INGRID 2007), held in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, from April 16 to 18, 2007. The material of all chapters is based on presentations held at the workshop, either as keynote addresses, invited or regular contributions. The book gathers contributions of recognized experts in these fields and provides a view of results from a number of recent and ongoing European projects on the subject of Remote Instrumentation and Grid computing. Grid Enabled Remote Instrumentation emphasizes the role of Grid middleware and services in the domain of remote instrumentation. The authors offer a multidisciplinary viewpoint, covering distributed computing (such as grid computing HPC), visualization, data repositories (archiving systems, digital libraries), networking, and instrumentation and measurement aspects. The authors aim to set the basis for further development in the field and, at the same time, to offer an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the field today.

Abstract

Franco Davoli Norbert Meyer Roberto Pugliese Sandro Zappatore (editors) Title: Remote Instrumentation for eScience and Related Aspects Accessing remote instrumentation worldwide is one of the goals of eScience. But the task of enabling the execution of complex experiments that involve the use of distributed scientific instruments requires a number of different architectural domains. Given the large number of different instruments and their application domains, understanding the common requirements, the user needs, the adaptation and convergence layers, among other things, is not simple, and that is the task of Remote Instrumentation Services (RIS). This text, like its predecessors, addresses the most relevant related aspects of RIS. Remote Instrumentation for eScience and Related Aspects is broken into five main parts. Part I centers on the concepts of Instrument Element and Virtual Control Room. Part II covers different features of Grid resource management on operations that are relevant in the context of RIS. Part III focuses on networking, one of the key supporting technologies that enable the interconnection of data sources and the transport of data. Part IV discusses application environments in various user communities, including eVLBI and its exploitation of high-speed networks, oceanographic applications, and road traffic data acquisition and modeling. And Part V is devoted to two learning environments where Remote Instrumentation plays a role of increasing importance; specifically it describes the main feature and demonstrator scenarios of BW-eLabs in Germany, and it reports on a distributed educational laboratory that is part of the “Wireless Trondheim” initiative in Norway.

Abstract

Distributed Cooperative Laboratories: Networking, Instrumentation, and Measurements is devoted to the investigation of the main issues related to the sustainable realization of tele-laboratories, where real and virtual instrumentation can be shared and used in a collaborative environment. This is a highly interdisciplinary topic, where various aspects converge: multimedia communications and networking, sensor networks, Grid technology, Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning and control, network management, measurement instrumentation and methodology, architecture of measurement systems. The material is organized into six parts: Technologies for Real-Time Interactive Multimedia Communications; Monitoring, Management and Configuration of Networks and Networking Devices; Data Acquisition and Aggregation in Sensor Networks; Grid Structures for Distributed Cooperative Laboratories; Architectures and Techniques for Tele-Measurements; Virtual Immersive Communications and Distance Learning. Each contribution presents a self-contained treatment, within a framework that provides the reader with an up-to-date picture of the most recent state-of-the-art developments.
