"The end of the world is a seemingly interminable topic; at least, of course, until it happens. Environmental catastrophe and planetary apocalypse are subjects of enduring fascination and, as ethnographic studies show, human cultures have approached them in very different ways. Indeed, in the face of the growing perception of the dire effects of global warming, some of these visions have been given a new lease on life. Information and analyses concerning the human causes and the catastrophic consequences of the planetary crisis have been accumulating at an ever-increasing rate, mobilising popular opinion as well as academic reflection. In this book, philosopher Deborah Danowski and anthropologist Eduardo Viveiros de Castro offer a bold overview and interpretation of these current discourses on the end of the world, reading them as thought experiments on the decline of the West's anthropological adventure; that is, as attempts, though not necessarily intentional ones, at inventing a mythology that is adequate to the present. Le geste de la modernité - viser la maîtrise non seulement de l'ensemble des formes naturelles mais également du monde comme totalité - est aujourd'hui invalidé par les conséquences qui en découlent, et que nous rassemblons sous le nom de "crise environnementale et climatique global" . A cette transformation, à toutes les échelles, des conditions de vie sur Terre, appelée aujourd'hui "Anthropocène" , correspond un renouvellement de l'idée formulée depuis longtemps par les écologistes, selon laquelle nous sommes tenus par les limites de notre planète. Plutôt qu'à la multiplication des performances techniques que suppose une hypothétique conquête de l'espace, répétant sur un autre mode nos rêves de prédation, c'est à un "retour sur Terre" que la crise environnementale nous confronte ; à une culture, aventureuse et responsable, des rapports à créer avec l'intrication infinie des êtres qui la peuplent. Cet ouvrage rassemble six essais, inédits en français, de philosophes, historien-ne-s, anthropologues et sociologues qui ont tou-te-s contribué ces dernières années à la prise en compte des enjeux écologiques dans les sciences humaines.
