This volume takes up part of the content of the one published on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Florence and constitutes, after 10 years, only for the first and second part of that volume, the natural continuation with all the necessary updates, while the third part will be resumed in a new volume. These 10 years have been characterized by a reform of the University which has significantly changed its structure with the abolition of the Faculties and the transfer of teaching organization to the Departments which, as it is well known, were originally constituted only as research bodies. This evolution will be discussed in the new volume. Questo volume riprende in parte il contenuto di quello dato alle stampe in occasione dei 40 anni della nascita della Facoltà di Ingegneria dell'Università di Firenze e ne costituisce, a distanza di dieci anni, per le sole prima e seconda parte la naturale prosecuzione con tutti gli aggiornamenti del caso, mentre la terza parte sarà ripresa in un nuovo volume. Questi dieci anni sono stati caratterizzati da una riforma dell'Università che ne ha cambiato significativamente la struttura con l'abolizione delle Facoltà ed il trasferimento della organizzazione della didattica ai Dipartimenti che, come è noto, sono nati come organi di sola ricerca. Sponsored by the University of Florence, the "National Committee for the celebrations of the bicentenary of the birth of Antonio Meucci" had multiple goals. These included: fostering a knowledge of the historic period in which Antonio Meucci lived in Florence, where he was born on 13 April 1808; contributing to spread and enhance technical-scientific culture among secondary school and university students; offering an occasion for reflection on the future of telecommunications from the perspective of technological innovation and the legal, regulatory, economic and social aspects; underscoring the influence of the telephone on the evolution of language, customs and means of expression, and finally co-ordinating and enhancing other initiatives not directly sponsored by the Committee. This book "Il telefono & dintorni" brings together a selection of the events, contributions and 'images' selected from among the numerous initiatives organised by the Meucci Committee over its three years of activity.
