Since 1990 the EU has enlarged to incorporate much of the Northern Europe including Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and the former East Germany. It has become the entity towards which the minor, small and great powers in the European north, and many regional agents and organizations there tend to look before anything else, and towards which regional political and economic activities increasingly tend to gear. This book provides the first comprehensive account of the emergence of the European Union as a north European power. It places the EU as an international actor not only in the context of North Europe but also creates a new understanding of (inter)relations between the EU and the unified states of the region. This unique study provides: A fresh approach to the under-theorized field of EU foreign policy. Key empirical material, including hundreds of documents, interviews and field experiments. In-depth case studies of relations between the EU, Nordic states, Baltic States and Russia with its north-western regions. This book will be of very strong interest to scholars of European Politics, foreign policy studies, Russian studies and International Relations.

Electrification: Accelerating the Energy Transition offers a widely applicable framework to delineate context-sensitive pathways by which this transition can be accelerated and lists the types of processes and structures that may hinder progress towards this goal. The framework draws insights from well-established literature, ranging from technological studies to socio-technical studies of energy transitions, on to strategic niche management approaches, (international) political economy approaches, and institutionalist literatures, while also adopting wider social theoretical ideas from structuration theory. Contributors discuss a multitude of case studies drawn from global examples of electrification projects. Brief case studies and text boxes help users further understand this domain and the technological, infrastructural and societal structures that may exercise significant powers

"In the contemporary policy debate on the EU's neighbourhood, grand designs are transforming into more pragmatic considerations. This book examines regional cooperation among the countries in Europe's northern neighbourhood, with an emphasis on the pitfalls and successes of engaging Russia. Drawing from the experiences of northern partnerships, the authors assess prospects for extending collaboration on energy, transport, the environment and public health. They conclude that practical regional cooperation with Russia in the north can prove highly relevant not only for developing the EU's northern policy but also for working with Russia more generally." --Résumé de l'éditeur.
