Abstract

Progress in the field of medicine over the last 50 years has led to important results for society, both in terms of prevention and in the treatment of single or variously associated pathologies. The main objective of modern medicine has been the acquisition of increased skills and highly specialised knowledge in the various disciplines. At the same time, there has been a progressive multidisciplinary and multi-professional interest in acute disease conditions that place the patient in potential or real life-threatening situations. The state of the art of intensive medicine comprises a wide range of sophisticated interventions and collaboration between different medical disciplines, both of which give the patient access to the most advanced forms of treatment that are currently available.

Abstract

Improving standards of care is a real challenge in Intensive Care Medicine. Bettering clinical performance, patient safety, risk management and audit represents the cornerstone for raising the quality of care in ICU patients. Communication is the platform from where to start to reach a consensus in an extremely crowded area, a unique multidisciplinary and multiprofessional environment in which quality of care and, ultimately, patient survival need to be ameliorated.

Abstract

The maxim "Primum non nocere" is almost as old as the practice of medicine. In combination with the principles of beneficence, autonomy and justice, and whilst keeping in mind the confidence and dignity of the patient, it should constitute the basis of our behaviours as physicians and nurses. Since diagnostic and therapeutic interventions have become more complex and their risk/benefit ratios more difficult to assess, the importance of safety and quality of care rises. Avoiding the infliction of harm on our patients has moved into the focus of clinical medicine. Patient safety is no

Abstract

This book functions as a practical guide for health care professionals encountering medical emergencies during a commercial flight. A second edition to its successful predecessor, this text covers the most common emergencies encountered during flight, both general medical emergencies and those specifically tied to the effects of flying, including cardiac, respiratory, and neurological issues. Medicolegal issues are considered in depth for both United States domestic and international flights, as there is potential legal risk involved in giving medical assistance on a flight. This new edition includes expanded and updated original chapters revised based on available new research material. Additional chapters examine how to handle disruptive passengers experiencing acute behavioral issues during flight, emerging infectious diseases. This issue is particularly relevant due to COVID-19, specifically concerning the anxiety and readjustment challenges of resuming everyday travel. This edition includes a new chapter recounting the history of the handling of in-flight medical events. In-Flight Medical Emergencies, 2nd ed functions as an essential resource for physicians and all healthcare professionals who travel regularly.
