KW - Europe KW - Intellectual life UR - https://www.unicat.be/uniCat?func=search&query=sysid:385098 AB - In the late 17th century, knowledge of the world and the world of science began to be provided through periodical media. The earliest and most successful representative of of these popular knowledge periodicals was the polymath Eberhard Werner Happel's "Grössten Denkwürdigkeiten der Welt oder so genannte Relationes Curiosae" [Greatest memoirs of the world, or so-called Relationes Curiosae] (1681-1691). Starting from the basic analogy of material and textual forms of collection in the Baroque, the author shows that the contemporary dominance of the Kunstkammer [Cabinet of curiosity] models rubbed off on the discourse of new media and also greatly influenced Happel's Hamburger Wochenblatt. This volume also opens up an expanded understanding of the formative time of science periodicals in the early modern period. ER -
