By looking at a diversity of media (television, radio, print, web, photography, but also museums), this book wants to focus on the process of participation itself, and to show on the one hand how complex and difficult it is for media organisations to uphold their democratic-communicative role. On the other hand, this book wants to emphasise the enormous potential and the societal responsibility of media organisations to facilitate these participatory processes. In order to achieve the book's main objective, a three-part structure has been developed, starting with a first part on the definition of participation (using an interdisciplinary approach), followed by a second part discussing five keywords (power, identity, technology, organisations and quality) which are all highly related to the concept of participation. The third and concluding part deals with media participation from an audience-based perspective. ER -
