In our work, we suggest some hypotheses and we propose solutions to solve this prickly problem for the Madagascan and the African species. The position of the genus Adenolobus, Brenierea and Griffonia is reviewed in regard of the genus Bauhinia sensu lato. This genus has been especially put under the spotlight. More than 4, 200 herbarium specimens were examined. A morphological characterization has been conducted for 53 taxa. More than 200 variables were taken into account. This data set was tested with different phenetic methods (SAHN) and principal component analyses. An internal structure has been extracted for the Cercidea. We suggest to restore the generic status of Gigasiphon, Piliostigma and Tylosema. At the same time, blastogenic observations were undertaken. Distribution maps have been elaborated from the specimen database. Then, a phytogeographical study has been conducted, for each taxon, based on climatic, ecological and phenological informations. These ones come to reinforce the numerical analysis of the structure of the African and Madagascan Cercideae. ER -
