National identities have been the focus of reflection by social scientists in the last two centuries. However, mass migration and market globalization have produced a vast array of transformations in civil society, the state and the nation ; citizens have to rewrite and rethink their identities. The crisis of modernity could be seen as a « life in fragments », where we ask ourselves about the future of culture, memory and democracy. In this article, we try to discern these transformations and their eventual consequences on the nation-state in polyethnic societies. We conclude by asserting the need to saveguard minorities rights in states and societies. ER -
