The purpose of this research was to create and characterize new polymers, which can be applied in optical devices like electro-optic modulators and switches. Polymers offer many advantages in comparison with inorganic materials that are used now. A few important advantages of polymers are a large electro-optic effect, mechanical strength, transparency, relative low production costs and a temporal, thermal and optical stability. The long-term stability of polymeric materials still gives some problems. Therefore, an electro-optic effect as high as possible and a superior thermal stability are the most important requirements for the polymers that we wanted to develop and to investigate. To achieve large nonlinear optical responses we need noncentrosymmetric materials. Organic systems (chromophores) in which a donor group is connected to an acceptor group by a pi-conjugated system (D-pi-A system) are highly efficient noncentrosymmetric molecules. D-pi-A systems give the electrons the possibility to move freely (high mobility) and to be shared by the whole system. In this way, the polarizability will increase and one can achieve large hyperpolarizabilities. If chromophores with large molecular hyperpolarizabilities are assembled into stable noncentrosymmetrical bulk materials, the hyperpolarizability can be translated into macroscopic nonlinear effects like second harmonic generation and electro-optic activity (susceptibility, electro-optic coefficient r). Chromophores can be incorporated in thin polymer films, which can be oriented easily by e.g. electric field poling. In this way, the chromophores can be aligned in the polymer matrix and macroscopic noncentrosymmetry is created. There are several types of polymeric systems that can be used for corona poling. A guest-host system is a class of polymeric materials that consists of a mixture of a polymer chain (the host) and chromophores (guest). In side-chain functionalized polymers, the chromophores are covalently bound to the polymer backbone. This type of polymers can be poled without any difficulty, but relaxation phenomena often occur. When nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores are incorporated in the polymer main chain, we talk about main-chain functionalized polymers. This system is less easily poled but the influence of relaxations is smaller. A high-quality group of materials is the donor-embedded polymers, in which the donor group of the chromophore is directly integrated in the polymerbackbone. On the one hand, donor-embedded polymers are flexible enough to pole and on the other hand, the system is rigid enough to prevent large relaxations. The second-order NLO properties of polymers were studied in thin polymer films, which were spincoated on conducting ITO slides. A protective polymer layer of PAA was often necessary to prevent bleaching during poling. An electric field was applied on the thin film (corona poling technique) to induce a polar order in the polymer system. The second-order susceptibilities and the electro-optic coefficient were determined by second harmonic generation measurements. Polarized SHG measurements were carried out to obtain patterns, which could be fitted to calculate the relativevalues of the tensor components. In this manner, it was also possible to determine the chiral component. The thermal stability was studied by keeping the samples at elevated temperatures and measuring the second-order effects regularly. The refractive index and the thickness of the polymer film were measured by prism coupling. Additional information about the structure can be achieved by UV-Vis spectroscopy, polarimetry and CD spectroscopy. A first group of polymers we studied werechromophore-functionalized vinyl urethanes with a high glass transition temperature. The chromophores were incorporated in the polymer backbone as side-chains, which led to a good flexibility for poling experiments. Two chromophores with a differentpi-bridge were synthesized: one chromophore had a phenyltetraene bridge and the other a thiophene bridge. The chromophore with the phenyltetraene bridge was utilized to create two polymers, which had a chromophore concentration of 9 and 23 wt%. Four other polymers were synthesized with the thiophene-bridged chromophore incorporated in the backbone and a CF3 group substituted on the polymer backbone. The CF3 group was incorporated to decrease the refractive index. The chromophore content of these four polymers varied from 9 to 19 wt%. UV-Vis spectra showed that the maximum absorption decreases during poling due to changes in the chromophore orientation. After a few days, the NLO chromophores relaxed slightly bit and therefore an increase in absorption was visible. The refractive index of the vinyl derivatives, measured by prism coupling, increased with increasing chromophore amount. This relationship was linearly and was an indication for the high polarizability of the chromophore. There were no large differences in refractive index between the polymers with and without an incorporated CF3 group. The NLO response of the four polymers with the thiophene-bridged chromophores was larger than the responseof the other two polymers and therefore it seemed that the chromophore with the thiophene bridge has better NLO qualities. A study of the susceptibility and the electro-optic coefficient as a function of the chromophore content showed that a maximumNLO response was reached at a chromophore amount of 13 wt%. Higher chromophore contents gave rise to a steep decrease of the NLO effect. This can be explained by the polymeric material: the chromophores were attached to the polymer backbone by aspacer and therefore aggregations occurred and the NLO response decreased. The stability was investigated by keeping the poled polymer at elevated temperatures. After 700 hours, the SHG intensity was already decreased with 70%. Probably, the samples were oxidized by the air in the oven. A following stability experiment showed that samples kept at the same temperature, but in a nitrogen atmosphere were very stable: only 10% to 35% of the nonlinearities were lost. In chapter five, we discussed chiral chromophore-functionalized polybinaphthalenes. Five different chromophores were synthesized and their electron donor group was incorporated in the polymer backbone, thereby creating donor-embedded polybinaphthalenes. The maximum wavelength of the homopolymers, obtained by UV-Vis spectroscopy, increased (red shift) under influence of polymerization due to of a better conjugation in the chromophore. CD spectra demonstrated that the chromophore type has no influence on the macromolecular structure of the homopolymers (100% chromophore). The glass transition temperature and the nonlinearities on the other hand are indeed dependent on the kind of chromophore. High-quality chromophores, with high hyperpolarizabilities, led to large NLO effects. The susceptibility of the copolymers increased linearly with increasing chromophore weight percentage due to the structure of the polybinaphthalenes. The rigid helical structure of these polymers eliminates indeed the dipolar interactions between the chromophores. Therefore, large NLO responses can be achieved. The rigid helical structure resembles a treelike structure: the polymer backbone acts as a trunk and the chromophores as branches.Polarized SHG measurements and CD spectra proved that a small chiral contribution was present in the chromophore-functionalized polybinaphthalenes. The chirality was originating from the helical structure of the NLO/polymer system. The susceptibilities obtained for polybinaphthalene polymers, prepared from an optical impure sample, differed from those of the homopolymers. This clear distinction is due to a difference in structure. Due to the impurity, the helical structure was destroyed and a random-coil like structure appeared. The same conclusions could be drawn by comparing the glass transition temperatures and the hyperpolarizabilities measured by hyper-Rayleigh scattering. Blends on the other hand, had very similar NLO properties as the homopolymers of the polybinaphthalenes and therefore they have a helical structure. This means that enantiomers do not prefer to react with monomers of the same configuration. The stability of the polybinaphthalenes was very good since even after one year the films did not lose a lot of their NLO response. This excellent stability can be explained by the donor-embedded helical structure of the polybinaphthalenes. Finally, donor-embedded polybinaphthalenes with a double bound were realized. Upon heat treatment, this double bond led to crosslinking between the polymer backbone and the NLO chromophores, thereby avoiding relaxation of the chromophores was avoided. Consequently, these crosslinked polymers showed very stable nonlinearities. It was also very clear that polymers treated at a higher temperature had a higher crosslinking degree. These results are very promising for further research on stable NLO materials with high nonlinearities. A binaphthyl derivativewas briefly discussed in chapter seven. This molecule is not a polymer but a system with two chirally oriented chromophores. Small chiral contributions were found in this molecule because of the chiral chromophores. Comparison of the relative valueswith those of the chromophore-functionalized polybinaphthalenes, demonstrated that the values of the binaphthyl derivative are lower because of the small amount of chromophores (two), ER -
