The existing models are created for the English language, the question is if they are applicable also to other languages, in our case Dutch. We chose football language as our research topic, because we are particularly interested in this domain and the social functions and underlying roles that come with it. First we discuss the phenomenon of football language. We start off with a general description of football language, followed by an analysis of football language on TV and the use of it in daily life. This particular language with its own vocabulary and even adjusted grammatical rules, appears to be used in other domains as well, such as politics. Seeing that football language has a social function, we chose to focus on that in the second part of our theoretical unit. First we describe Halliday’s systemic-functional grammar where we focus on the interpersonal dimension of language. According to Halliday there are three metafunctions in language, the ideational, the textual and the interpersonal. Then we move on to Herbert Clark, who developed several theories about the social aspect of language. According to Clark conversation partners need to have a certain common ground in order to be able to discuss a topic. They participate in a so-called joint action, usually in the form of face-to-face conversations, which are the basis of language. In the third part of our theoretical description, we discuss Martin & White’s appraisal theory. The appraisal theory is based on Halliday’s interpersonal metafunction, and tries to categorize evaluative language use. Martin & White have created several categories for the classification of evaluative language in English. After the theoretical part comes our analysis. In our analysis we apply the appraisal theory to our corpus, which consists of two episodes of the Dutch football discussion programme “Studio Voetbal”. Studio Voetbal is a weekly TV-show, where experts discuss the recent developments in the football world. One episode focuses on referees and the other on football coaches. We transcribed all the fragments that contain evaluative language use and tried to categorize them according to the appraisal theory. Where necessary we added a new category to the appraisal theory, applicable to our specific football corpus. In the end we hope to have demonstrated that the appraisal theory is indeed also applicable to the Dutch language and we hope to have created an extended version of this theory for our specific topic.
