The first edition was designed as a mixture of information taken from current scientific literature as well as from Kricher's own experiences on the islands. The book was modestly illustrated with one color signature containing fifty photos as well as scattered black-and-white images, mostly photographs, in the text. Included was a map of the islands and some graphics of oceanic current patterns and basic plate tectonics. In the 13 years that have passed since the publication of Kricher's book, new information has been accumulated on such topics as the taxonomy and classification of Darwin's finches, tortoises, iguanas (both sea and land), as well as within other groups. The new edition will bring the narrative up to date, especially for animal species typically of most interest to visitors. There will be much more discussion of the effects of climate change, as well as various conservation initiatives and challenges: invasive species, human population increase on the islands, ecotourism increase, and fisheries controversies. In addition, many visitors now enjoy extensive snorkeling opportunities in Galapagos and this new edition will include more on Galapagos marine life, especially fish diversity. Most significantly, the book will have circa 600 of Kevin Loughlin's high-quality color photographs scattered throughout."-- ER -
