"A memoir by Luke Timothy Johnson in which Johnson reflects on the life experiences that made him a scholar and on the general requirements of scholarship"-- "A witness to the peculiar way of being that is the scholar's Luke Timothy Johnson is one of the best-known and most influential New Testament scholars of recent decades. In this memoir, he draws on his rich experience to invite readers into the scholar's life-its aims, commitments, and habits. In addition to sharing his own story, from childhood to retirement, Johnson reflects on the nature of scholarship more generally, showing how this vocation has changed over the past half-century and where it might be going in the future. He is as candid and unsparing about negative trends in academia as he is hopeful about the possibilities of steadfast, disciplined scholarship. In two closing chapters, he discusses the essential intellectual and moral virtues of scholarly excellence, including curiosity, imagination, courage, discipline, persistence, detachment, and contentment. Johnson's robust defense of the scholarly life-portrayed throughout this book as a generative process of discovery and disclosure-will inspire both new and seasoned scholars, as well as anyone who reads and values good scholarship. But The Mind in Another Place ultimately resonates beyond the walls of the academy and speaks to matters more universally human: the love of knowledge and the lifelong pursuit of truth"--

Luke-Acts is not a consistent book, but a much-discussed problem. This study presents its discourse history from the eighteenth century to the present, traces its ancient reception, examines the relationship between Luke’s writings, the unity of the author, the site of the Luke-Acts in the Marcion debate, its media innovations, and the role it played in shaping the early Christian view of history.

"Steve Reece argues that the author of Luke-Acts was aware of many literary works that formed a part of basic Hellenistic literate education, and makes his case by proving that many Greek authors were well known (from papyrological and citational data) at the likely time of Luke's composition. By focusing solely upon Luke-Acts, Reece is able to explore the evident Hellenistic education of the author, including the content of the curriculum, and the papyrological evidence of school exercises, his potential familiarity with Greek authors, and the influence of each of these major authors upon his work"--

"In this study, Julie Newberry advances scholarship on emotions in biblical literature by examining the conditions − that is, the circumstances, dispositions, practices, and commitments − that lead to joy in Luke's narrative. Focused primarily on the Gospel, the author traces joy's interconnection with the wider life of discipleship, using an eclectically interdisciplinary approach that foregrounds literary-theological and intertextual analysis. Julie Newberry argues that, for Luke, the conditions that facilitate appropriate joy include both divine action to bring about joy-conducive circumstances and human receptivity. The latter is bound up with factors such as properly oriented hope, trust, and the generous use of possessions, rendering intelligible Luke's portrayal of joy as mandatory, praiseworthy, or blameworthy in particular circumstances."

"Luke has often been understood to transmit a variety of Christological traditions without reflecting on them in relation to each other. In this study, Daniel Gustafsson challenges such positions and demonstrates that when the Gospel of Luke is approached as a narrative, a different picture emerges. Presentations of Jesus as "Messiah", "Son of God", "prophet", and "Son of Man" are shown to conform to Luke's overall plot and significantly overlap each other. The voices of characters with high authority, the use of Scripture, and Jesus's relationship to the Holy Spirit are examples of other factors that contribute to coherency in Luke's Christology."--
