Abstract

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Although the Mycenaean civilization of the Greek Bronze Age was identified 150 years ago, its origins remain obscure. Jack L. Davis, codirector of excavations at the Palace of Nestor at Pylos, takes readers on a tour of the beginnings of Mycenaean civilization through a case study of this important site. In collaboration with codirector Sharon R. Stocker, Davis demonstrates that this ancient place was a major node for the exchange of ideas between the already established Minoan civilization, centered on the island of Crete, and the residents of the Greek mainland. Davis and Stocker show how adoption of Minoan culture created an ideology of power focused on a single individual, celebrating his military prowess, investing him with divine authority, and creating a figure instantly recognizable to readers of Homer and students of Greek history. A Greek State in Formation makes the powerful case that a knowledge of the Greek Bronze Age is indispensable to the classics curriculum.

Abstract

This volume is the second of two that represent the final publication of Sector I of the Prepalatial to Postpalatial Minoan urban settlement and palace of Petras, Siteia, located in eastern Crete. It presents in detail the Late Bronze Age pottery recovered during the excavations conducted there from 1985 to 2000. The Neopalatial and Late Minoan II to III pottery from Houses I.1 and I.2 is analyzed and discussed with a focus on the main Neopalatial period of the Petras settlement and its Postpalatial reoccupation. The petrographic analysis of a select group of pottery from House I.1 is also detailed, allowing for a discussion of patterns in production and consumption over time.

Abstract

Ivory combs of the Late Bronze Age Aegean have not gained the proper attention so far, despite the fact that they belong, together with the pins and pyxis fashioned by the same material, to prestigious toiletry sets documented in the wider area of the Eastern Mediterranean. Although they never became an indispensable accessory for the Mycenaeans, ivory combs indicate prosperity, and high status for the male and female burials they furnished, from the exquisite gold-sheathed specimens of Grave Circle A at Mycenae to the later simple ones of the warrior burials in Achaea. The corpus of the 83 Mycenaean combs held at the National Archaeological Museum is the largest of the kind, with specimens covering almost all the Peloponnese and part of Attica, ranging in date from Late Helladic I to Late Helladic IIIC. Aspects of their technology, typology, iconography, context, and social significane discussed in the volume, are expected to shed light on yet another important class of Mycenaean craftsmanship. The results are comprehensive, eclectic, scientifically informative and intellectually provocative. They help us see protohistoric Aegean cultures as the non-human animals inectricably linked to them saw them.
