"This volume reclaims Mumbai's legacy as a global financial centre of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century. It shows how Mumbai, or erstwhile Bombay, once served as a central node in global networks of trade, finance, commercial institutions, and most importantly trading communities. In doing so it highlights that this city more than any other Indian city still possesses all these virtuous elements making it an appropriate location for a financial Special Economic Zone - an idea shelved temporarily. The book explores how the city flourished in its heyday as a trading, financial, commercial, and manufacturing hub in a globalised colonial world. While the city's importance as a nodal financial hub in the global economy ebbed post India's Independence and the Second World War, the multi-cultural city found renewed importance following the forex crisis of 1991. La région, notion fondatrice de l'aménagement du territoire, est toujours pertinente et incontournable pour l'organisation socio-territoriale contemporaine. Cet ouvrage livre une vision actualisée de ces questions, avec une approche originale et inédite, à la fois interdisciplinaire et internationale. L'analyse combine plusieurs corpus et approches de la région - notamment francophone et anglophone, mais pas seulement - ce qui à ce jour reste peu fréquent. Ces apports théoriques sont croisés avec les données empiriques issues de plusieurs études de cas, en France et en Europe : région Occitanie nouvellement créée, eurorégions à la frontière nord-est de la France et macro-région de la Méditerranée occidentale. L'analyse permet ainsi de dégager plusieurs enseignements et de dresser des perspectives pour une reconsidération de la région et de l'aménagement régional, selon trois enjeux : la coopération, la complexité et l'incarnation. Human capital is of utmost importance for the future of our knowledge economies and societies. However, it is unequally distributed in Europe, contributing to marked spatial patterns of economic prosperity within and across countries. In many cases, these patterns have a long history. To understand them better, it requires to go back in time, when mass schooling was starting to become a reality across Europe. Taking a long-run perspective over more than 150 years, this book shows the development and the distribution of human capital in the regions of Europe and its connections with the economy. It's time for America to move beyond zoning, argues city planner M. Nolan Gray in Arbitrary Lines: How Zoning Broke the American City and How to Fix It.
