La notion d'exercice spirituel s'élabore au sein des différentes écoles philosophiques de l'Antiquité, essentiellement chez les stoïciens, mais aussi les épicuriens et les cyniques, qui vont développer techniques et méthodes pour que chacun puisse parvenir à un mieux-être. Toutes visent à la sérénité, l'homme en harmonie avec la conscience que la vie est courte, que le temps à vivre est incertain, que l'existence est ponctuée de maux, de douleurs et d'obstacles qu'il faut savoir surmonter. Cette pratique de la philosophie comme exercice spirituel est un véritable mode de vie qui irrigue toute l'Antiquité, de la période hellénistique jusqu'à l'avènement chrétien, moment où la philosophie devient une discipline au service de Dieu. Mais au Moyen âge, à la Renaissance et à l'âge classique, la philosophie comme mode de vie perdure et l'espace contemporain n'en est pas dépourvu également. Pour la première fois, les textes fondateurs des exercices spirituels sont regroupés dans un même volume à travers sept thèmes majeurs dont chacun est divisé en trois périodes distinctes : l'Antiquité ; l'époque moderne ; enfin la période contemporaine, depuis Emerson jusqu'à ce début du XXIe siècle.

"When Lisa Knopp visited Nebraskas death row with other death penalty abolitionists in 1995, she couldnt have imagined that one of the inmates she met that day would become a dear friend. For the next twenty-three years, through visits, phone calls, and letters, a remarkable, platonic friendship flourished between Knopp, an English professor, and Carey Dean Moore, whod murdered two Omaha cab drivers in 1979 and for which he was executed by lethal injection in 2018. From Your Friend, Carey Dean: Letters from Nebraskas Death Row, tells two other stories, as well. One is that of a broken correctional system (Nebraskas prisons are overcrowded, understaffed, and underfunded, and excessive in their use of solitary confinement), and what its like to be incarcerated there, which Moore frequently spoke and wrote about. The other is the story of how a double murderer was transformed and nourished by his faith in Gods promises. Der Band untersucht die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Hymnus und Gebet in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit. Der Fokus liegt auf den vielfältigen Adaptationen lateinischer Hymnen und Sequenzen für den Gebrauch in der volkssprachlichen Andacht. Wie verhalten sich Hymnus und Gebet gattungstypisch zueinander? Welche Formen und Funktionen nehmen volkssprachliche Bearbeitungen liturgischer Lieder in ihren jeweiligen pragmatischen Umgebungen an? Die Fallstudien, die dieser Band versammelt, loten das Spektrum des Gattungs- und Gebrauchswechsels auf dem Weg vom Hymnus zum Gebet aus. Sie analysieren Phänomene des Medienwechsels, Spezifika der Überlieferungsträger und Überlieferungskontexte sowie die poetologischen Innovationen der volkssprachlichen Übertragungen. Weitere Aspekte, auf welche die mittelhochdeutschen, mittelniederdeutschen und mittelniederländischen Quellen hin untersucht werden, betreffen das Verhältnis von Liturgie und Volkssprache, Öffentlichkeit und Privatheit, Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit sowie Gesang und Lektüre. Augustine has put an important mark on later Christian thinking. Moreover, he composed a lot of writings: more than eight hundred sermons, some three hundred letters, and a hundred works in which he unfolds his theological vision.This book presents some basic thoughts on the spirituality of this great church father. In different ways the author clarifies in which sense the spirituality of Augustine can be a breath of fresh air for our times. The conversion experience that Augustine went through ultimately became the experience of a growing trust in God who first loved us.
