Si la poésie comme genre littéraire n'occupe qu'une place infime dans les lectures de nos contemporains, elle n'a visiblement pas disparu du langage commun, où son dérivé, l'adjectif "poétique", est souvent utilisé à propos du cinéma.Mais à quoi renvoie alors cette catégorie aux contours flous ? Associant chercheurs en cinéma et en littérature, ce volume entend mener l'enquête sur cette quête de poésie au cinéma. Adoptant une démarche non normative, il s'interroge sur les formes et les significations du poétique au cinéma mais aussi sur la manière dont il peut informer les représentations filmiques des poètes et de la poésie.

The Last Word argues that the Hollywood novel opened up space for cultural critique of the film industry at a time when the industry lacked the capacity to critique itself. While the young studio system worked tirelessly to burnish its public image in the wake of celebrity scandal, several industry insiders wrote fiction to fill in what newspapers and fan magazines left out. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, these novels aimed to expose the invisible machinery of classical Hollywood cinema, including not only the evolving artifice of the screen but also the promotional discourse that complemented it. As likeminded filmmakers in the 1940s and 1950s gradually brought the dark side of the industry to the screen, however, the Hollywood novel found itself struggling to live up to its original promise of delivering the unfilmable. By the 1960s, desperate to remain relevant, the genre had devolved into little more than erotic fantasy of movie stars behind closed doors, perhaps the only thing the public couldn't already find elsewhere. Still, given their unique ability to speak beyond the institutional restraints of their time, these earlier works offer a window into the industry's dynamic creation and re-creation of itself in the public imagination.

"French novels, plays, poems and short stories, however temporally or culturally distant from us, continue to be incarnated and reincarnated on cinema screens across the world. From the silent films of Georges Méliès to the Hollywood production of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary directed by Sophie Barthes, The History of French Literature on Film explores the key films, directors, and movements that have shaped the adaptation of works by French authors since the end of the 19th century. Across six chapters, Griffiths and Watts examine the factors that have driven this vibrant adaptive industry, as filmmakers have turned to literature in search of commercial profits, cultural legitimacy, and stories rich in dramatic potential. The volume also explains how the work of theorists from a variety of disciplines (literary theory, translation theory, adaptation theory), can help to deepen both our understanding and our appreciation of literary adaptation as a creative practice. Finally, this volume seeks to make clear that adaptation is never a simple transcription of an earlier literary work. It is always simultaneously an adaptation of the society and era for which it is created. Adaptations of French literature are thus not only valuable artistic artefacts in their own right, so too are they important historical documents which testify to the values and tastes of their own time."

Les coéditeurs de cet ouvrage, Ludovic Cortade (New York University) et Guillaume Soulez (Sorbonne Nouvelle Paris 3), rassemblent un ensemble de contributions rédigées par des spécialistes de l'écrit et de l'écran permettant de penser l'écosystème forme par l'espace, le cinéma et la littérature. À partir des œuvres d'écrivains et réalisateurs, parmi lesquels Emile Zola, Alfred Jarry, Julien Gracq, Jacques Demy, Agnès Varda, Marguerite Duras, Ousmane Sembene ou Edouard Glissant, les problématiques abordées dans ce volume inscrivent l'esthétique de la forme et de la réception dans une stratigraphie de méthodes et de concepts associant la géocritique, la poétique, l'esthétique et la géopolitique.
