Abstract

The situation of young people in Europe has been significantly impacted by recent changes that have taken place in the job market. Young people's life trajectories and transitions to adulthood are increasingly less linear, more segmented and more reversible, with a rise in unemployment and the NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) phenomenon. This book aims to investigate the youth policies implemented in Europe and how they are integrated in the socio-economic contexts of the various member states and their welfare regimes, educational systems and skills markets. A significant number of young adults neither study nor work and live in a constant state of discouragement and inactivity, giving up on their search for job opportunities. The strategic choices implemented at the European level in response to this problem promote active labour market policies (ALMP), including the creation of the Youth Guarantee Program, which is examined here both at the European level and, specifically, in the Italian context.

Abstract

In what ways is climate change political? This book addresses this key - but oddly neglected - question. It argues that in order to answer it we need to understand politics in a three-fold way: as a site of authoritative, public decision-making; as a question of power; and as a conflictual phenomenon. Recurring themes center on de- and re-politicization, and a tension between attempts to simplify climate change to a single problem and its intrinsic complexity. These dynamics are driven by processes of capital accumulation and their associated subjectivities. The book explores these arguments through an analysis of a specific city - Ottawa - which acts as a microcosm of these broader processes. It provides detailed analyses of conflicts over urban planning, transport, and attempts by city government and other institutions to address climate change. The book will be valuable for students and researches looking at the politics of climate change.

Abstract

"Since the doi moi reforms in 1986, Vietnam has experienced a dramatic socioeconomic transformation. Lim examines the role of the state and its interaction with market forces in bringing this change about. Taking the motorcycle and banking industries as case studies, this book explores the dynamics between the state and transnational corporations in shaping the manufacturing and service sectors respectively. Vietnam, as one of Southeast Asia's quintessential latecomer economies with little prior experience of dealing with transnational corporations, has nevertheless been quite successful in maintaining some control over the impact of foreign direct investment. Yet, the learning outcomes remain highly uneven. In addition, Lim argues that Vietnamese advancement in both industries mirrors only partially the more generalized patterns of state-led development in East Asia's earlier batch of latecomer economies. Vietnam's case thus presents practical lessons on how to succeed in crafting and utilizing policy instruments to achieve domestic economic and technological upgrading. This book will be of great interest to scholars of political economy and industrial policy in East Asia, as well as to scholars and policy professionals analysing approaches to development strategy more broadly"--

Abstract

Cambodia is blessed with a vast array of spectacular landscapes and pristine natural riches. This natural beauty, along with the country's cultural wonders, is what ecotourists come to Cambodia for. The opportunities for supporting the expansion of the ecotourism industry to meet this demand are immense. Ecotourism involves traveling to areas of pristine nature, usually protected, to appreciate the environment while causing minimal impact. Ecotourism offers multiple benefits. However, the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the tourism industry in Cambodia has been significant. The epidemic has escalated rapidly from a health emergency to a full economic crisis. Since the beginning of the outbreak, several local and international surveys have been conducted that can help us understand the impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on Cambodia's tourism sector and guide the recovery. This note presents policy options to support the sustainable development of ecotourism as part of a broader strategy for sustainable management of the country's natural capital. In addition, the policy note provides recommendations to the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) to help the recovery of the tourism sector post-COVID-19.
