In 1936 Samuel Beckett wrote a letter to Sergei Eisenstein - the legendary director of such films as Battleship Potemkin - expressing his own desire to work in the lost tradition of silent film. Drawing on substantial archival material, this is the first book to examine comprehensively the full extent of Beckett's engagement with cinema and its influence on his work for stage and screen. Examining his writing on second wave modernist cinema, including the work of directors such as Eisenstein, Godard, Griffith and Bresson as well as performers such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo, the book reveals film art to be central to Beckett's modernist aesthetic. In this way, Beckett is revealed to be part of a wider modernist theatrical tradition that stood as an inheritor of early 20th century cinema, alongside Meyerhold, Brecht and Artaud.

Une étude de l'influence des lectures du réalisateur italien sur son travail cinématographique à travers l'analyse des oeuvres les plus marquantes de sa filmographie. L'accent est mis sur l'inspiration, frôlant parfois l'adaptation, de deux écrivains italiens majeurs, Giovanni Verga et Gabriele D'Annunzio, et sur la manière dont des références à leur travail traversent constamment ses films. ©Electre 2020 Luchino Visconti, metteur en scène de cinéma, de théâtre mais aussi d'opéra a été particulièrement influencé par la littérature de la fin du XIXe siècle et du début du XXe siècle. S'il reste, près de 50 ans après sa mort, l'esthète décadent, lecteur de Marcel Proust et de Thomas Mann, il n'en a pas moins été influencé par les oeuvres de deux autres écrivains, italiens ceux-là : Giovanni Verga et Gabriele D'Annunzio.Si leur notoriété est moins éclatante, ils ont, malgré tout, fortement marqué le parcours du réalisateur, qui adapta du premier I Malavoglia (son deuxième film) et du second L'Innocente (son dernier film). Cet ouvrage s'interroge sur l'ampleur de ces influences littéraires et sur les rapports entretenus par Visconti avec Verga et D'Annunzio à travers l'analyse de quatre de ses films : La terra trema, Roccoe i suoi fratelli, Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa...et L'innocente, dans lesquels leur empreinte est particulièrement prégnante.

The search for immediacy, the desire to feel directly connected to people or events, has been a driving force in American literature and media culture for the past two centuries. This book offers the first in-depth study of literary immediacy effects. It shows how the heightened reality effects of photography, film, and television inspired American writers to create new literary forms that would enhance their readers' sense of immediate participation in the world. The study combines close readings of Emerson, Whitman, Stein, Dos Passos, Coover, Foster Wallace, and DeLillo with detailed considerations of visual media to open up a new perspective on literary innovation and the ongoing cultural quest for increased immediacy. It argues that we can better understand how American literature develops when we consider experiments with literary form not only in literary and cultural contexts but also in relation to the emergence of new media, their immediacy effects, and the larger changes in social life that they manifest and provoke.
