Bauman, Elias and Latour on Modernity and its Alternatives provides a synopsis of and comparison between the conceptions of modernity and its alternatives, as found in the works of Bauman, Elias and Latour. Bauman and Elias share a few relevant features bearing on their conceptions of modernity and its possible alternatives; Latour, on the other hand, when compared to these sociologists, is a maverick thinker. The set of alternatives is as follows: modernity vs post-modernity (Bauman); civilization vs barbarity (Elias) and successful vs unsuccessful hybrids (Latour). Bauman's and Elias' conceptions of modernity differ in some important respects. The constitutive elements of modernity are, according to Bauman, cognitive order, regulation, stability of relations and identities, and the role of intellectuals as legislators. In Elias' view, pacification and civilization are the hallmarks of modernity. Both Bauman and Elias maintain, despite their differences, that a condition of barbarity indicates the absence of civilization, but not of modernity. According to Latour, the scientific usefulness of the concepts of modernity and, by implication, of non-modernity is questionable. If hybrids are defined as heterogeneous associations between humans and non-humans such as instruments and machines, by virtue of their great number they produce a variety of ways in which distinct and incompatible modes of knowledge may be interpreted, defined, and linked. This occurs by means of mediators.

Are we made of spirit or body? Or are we a «third thing», as Nietzsche said almost 140 years ago? The question is not trivial. If, on the one hand, God’s death does not allow us to trust in the immortal soul that takes away from the torments of the flesh to be destined for final judgement, on the other hand, a mechanistic scientific vision reduces everything to the body, understood as a pure piece of matter, impoverishing our vital experience. Beyond these two moments, Nietzsche intuits a space that remains to be explored, which is both physical and moral, biological and social. This book continues and deepens a research work on Nietzsche started by Papparo over 25 years ago, first with La passione senza nome (1995), then with Qualcosa del corpo (2016), taking in analysis not only the texts of the German philosopher, but his most recent interpretations. Not only Heidegger (and the French philosophy of the second half of the twentieth century: Bataille, Deleuze or Derrida), but some “friend” thinkers: Stiegler, Masullo, Giametta, Moroncini, Mazzarella, Vitiello, Giugliano... An incessant comparison that gives this book the peculiar physiognomy of a book written on the margins of the many texts examined Siamo fatti di spirito o di corpo? O di una «terza cosa», come affermava Nietzsche quasi 140 anni fa? La domanda non è banale. Se da un lato l’avvenuta morte di Dio non ci consente di confidare nell’anima immortale da sottrarre ai tormenti della carne per destinarla al giudizio finale, da un altro lato una visione scientifica meccanicistica riduce tutto al corpo, inteso come puro pezzo di materia, impoverendo la nostra esperienza vitale. Oltre questi due momenti, Nietzsche intuisce uno spazio che resta ancora tutta da esplorare, che è allo stesso tempo fisico e morale, biologico e sociale. Così questo libro continua e approfondisce un lavoro di ricerca su Nietzsche iniziato da Papparo oltre 25 anni fa, prima con La passione senza nome (1995), poi con Qualcosa del corpo (2016), prendendo in analisi non più soltanto i testi del filosofo tedesco, ma le sue interpretazioni più recenti. Non solo Heidegger (e la filosofia francese del secondo Novecento: Bataille, Deleuze o Derrida), ma alcuni pensatori “amici”: Stiegler, Masullo, Giametta, Moroncini, Mazzarella, Vitiello, Giugliano… Un confronto incessante che dà a questo libro la peculiare fisionomia di uno scritto al margine dei tanti testi presi in esame
