Le jubilé des 500 ans de la Réforme protestante suscite une pléiade de célébrations mémorielles, qui semblent avant tout l'occasion de fêter son héros fondateur. Martin Luther est régulièrement acclamé comme le chantre de la liberté de conscience ou l'inventeur de l'individu, voire de la démocratie moderne. Or cette image consensuelle et fantasmée n'a pas toujours été dominante dans les imaginaires collectifs. L'invention de traditions et de politiques mémorielles autour de Luther plonge ses racines dans la bataille du souvenir qui débuta à sa mort, en 1546, et qui se joua en mots et en images. Ce livre se propose de faire redécouvrir au lecteur les premiers portraits littéraires du Père de la Réforme, esquissés des deux côtés de la barrière confessionnelle, mais aussi de restituer l'image qu'il s'employa à façonner de lui-même pour la postérité. Le petit texte autobiographique écrit par Luther en 1545, un an avant sa mort, consacré au récit des origines de sa révolte contre Rome, la Vie de Luther par Melanchthon (1546), le principal ordonnateur de la mémoire du Réformateur dans le monde protestant, enfin la Vie écrite par Noël Taillepied (1577), polémiste franciscain et premier biographe français de Luther, permettent d'entrer dans la fabrique des mythologies luthériennes. Ces trois textes fondateurs, présentés et édités par Marion Deschamp, sont précédés d'une étude sur l'invention de cultures confessionnelles du souvenir et complétés par un corpus iconographique commenté.

This encyclopedia is a collaboration of the leading scholars in the field of Reformation research and the thought, life, and legacy of influence - for good and for ill - of Martin Luther. In 2017 the world marks 500 years since the beginning of the public work of Luther, whose protest against corrupt practices and the way theology was taught captured Europe's attention from 1517 onward. Comprising 125 extensive articles in three volumes, the Oxford Encyclopedia of Martin Luther examines: the contexts that shaped his social and intellectual world, such as previous theological and institutional developments; the genres in which he worked, including some he essentially created; the theological and ethical writings that make up the lion's share of his massive intellectual output; and the complicated and contested history of his reception across the globe and across a span of disciplines. This indispensable work seeks both to answer perennial questions as well as to raise new ones. Intentionally forward-looking in approach, the ORE of Martin Luther provides a reliable survey to such issues as, for instance, how did Luther understand God? What did he mean by his notion of "vocation?" How did he make use of, but also transform, medieval thought patterns and traditions? How did Luther and the Reformation re-shape Europe and launch modernity? What were his thoughts about Islam and Judaism, and how did the history of the effects of those writings unfold?
