Born in the Industrial Revolution, the factory has long been considered like a monster of iron, subjugating the individual to the collective in an act of mass dehumanisation.Turning away from the pure functionality for which it was built, the factory is evolving into an aesthetic space, sometimes transformed into modern lofts or a museum of contemporary art. The Economic Crisis has refocused attention on the central nature of the real economy. Industry is once more seen as an opportunity for the future, naturally according to new patterns of production, distribution and consumption. This entails a new factory template, one that can meet the demands of globalisation while also establishing a sustainable relationship with its surroundings, in a social and environmental sense. There is clearly also a need to address the physical design of workplaces in an innovative way, providing environments that are suited to radical changes in the realms of technology, safety and amenity. Neither the historical examples of large-scale industrial architecture from the heroic age of Modernism, nor those of the post-war industrial boom, can match the different needs of society and the market today. This book aims to bridge a gap then, by providing useful references for those who have to contend with the design of industrial complexes. It is based on the experience of a design practice that, for decades, has dealt with the increasingly detailed and sophisticated issues related to industrial design.

This handbook introduces a methodical approach and pragmatic concept for the planning and design of changeable factories, proven in many industrial projects. In the first part, change drivers of manufacturing enterprises and the resulting new challenges are considered. The second part concerns the design of the production facilities on the different factory levels under functional, organizational, architectural and strategic aspects considering environmental, health and safety aspects. The third part is dedicated to the planning process that is based on a synergetic interaction of process and space. The accompanying project management of the planning and construction phase and the facility management for the effective utilization of the built premises close the book. The Authors Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Peter Wiendahl has been director for 23 years of the Institute of Factory planning and Logistics at the Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany. Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Architekt BDA Jürgen Reichardt is Professor at the Muenster school of architecture in Germany, partner of RMA Reichardt – Maas – Associate  Architects in Essen, Germany, and partner of BR Architects & Engineers Pvt. Ltd., (Managing Director: Architect Indranil Bhattacharya), in Bangalore, India. Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Peter Nyhuis is since 2003 Managing Director of the Institute of Factory Planning and Logistics at the Leibniz University of Hannover in Germany.
