Atreyashiksha is one of the Shiksha texts of the Krishna-Yajurveda, Taittiriya school. This text has been critically edited and translated consulting two palm-leaf manuscripts which are currently the only discovered manuscripts of this text in public libraries. Shiksha texts deal with phonetics and phonology of the Vedas and the method of proper pronunciation and recitation. The Atreyashiksha is well-structured in terms of arranging its topics of discussion. When compared to the other Shikshas of the Taittiriya school, the Atreyashiksha, in keeping its focus on the discussion on the different methods of Vedic recitation, namely, word-reading (padapatha), sequential reading (kramapatha), tangled reading (jatapatha) and the five varieties of the reading of the phonic sequences (varnakramas), holds a unique position in the corpus of the Shiksha literature. A close reading of the text shows that the main aim of the text is to explain the practical aspects of the different ways of Vedic recitation, in whose connection it describes the theoretical elements of Shiksha too. The book, therefore, serves as a practical guidebook to Vedic reciters who recite the above-mentioned readings of the Taittiriya Krishna-Yajurveda along with the continuous reading. While describing the methods of recitation, the Atreyashiksha gives enough emphasis on the theoretical nuances. The phonological rules, most of which are expressed in the Taittiriya Pratishakhya, are also illustrated in this text. This book consists of a detailed introduction, the critically edited text in Devanagari script, its Roman transliteration and an authentic English translation.

For the entertainment of the unhappy queen Sūryavatī, the Śaiva Brahmin Somadeva, court poet of king Ananta of Kashmir, composed during the years between 1063 and 1081 AD a Sanskrit version of the Bṛhatkathā of Guṇāḍhya, a long, nested tale in the Paiśācī dialect of northern India. Well-known through a ten-volumed annotated English translation (1924–28), the “Ocean of Story” (Kathāsaritsāgara) shows the gamut of cultural life. This valuable data cannot be fully exploited by the variable and incomplete index of Vol.X of Tawney’s and Penzer’s admirable work. With the present, new index of the Sanskrit text, the retired Heidelberg scholar Prof. Willem Bollée wishes to fill a gap for fellow Indologists and cultural experts from other disciplines as well as for Social Anthropologists. This is to be achieved by working out the wealth of cultural information contained in the Kathāsaritsāgara, and also demonstrating how a useful cultural history index of Epics, Purāṇas, Jātakas, etc., could look, with a view to suggesting promising topics for further research.

This work offers a critical analysis of the Sanskrit, Syriac and Persian sources in Rhazes’ (d. 925 CE) Comprehensive Book (or al-Kitāb al-Ḥāwī), a hugely famous and highly unusual medico-pharmaceutical encyclopedia originally written in Arabic. All text material appears in full Arabic with English translations throughout, whilst the traceable Indian fragments are represented here, for the first time, in both the original Sanskrit and corresponding English translations. The philological core of the book is framed by a detailed introductory study on the transmission of Indian, Syrian and Iranian medicine and pharmacy to the Arabs, and by extensive bilingual glossaries of relevant Arabic and Sanskrit terms as well as Latin botanical identifications. The World Award for the Book of the Year of the Islamic Republic of Iran has selected this title as one the best books of the year 2015 in the field of Islamic/ Iranian Studies.
