Transgender individuals--those who live outside conventional binary gender constructs--challenge what we know about how identity works. Their experiences provide rare insights into not only gender and sexuality but also self-perception and identity construction, both personal and social. The first volume specifically on the topic, Gender and Sexual Identity presents transgender theory in depth, differentiating it from feminist and queer theories as well as from biological essentialist views on gender. The ongoing movement toward globalization challenges us to reconsider issues of individual identity. Are we evolving into citizens of the world? How crucial is nationality? And for men, what does it now mean to be male? Diverse answers to this provocative question are analyzed in Masculinities in a Global Era in its theoretical models, study findings, and compelling examples. Our uncertain times are hard enough for adults to navigate. For all too many young people—even many who appear to possess good coping skills—the challenges may seem overwhelming. More and more, resilience stands as an integral component in prevention programs geared to children and adolescents, whether at risk or not.
