This volume of the Corpus Fontium Manichaeorum brings together a large number of excerpts in Greek and Latin from both Manichaean and anti-Manichaean sources on the sect's central teaching on cosmogony and ethics. The texts have been translated by a seasoned team of classical scholars who have endeavoured to produce a translation which is both accurate and fluent. The volume contains excerpts from key Manichaean texts found in Egypt and other parts of the Roman Empire as well as from the writings of Church Fathers like Serapion of Thmuis, Titus of Bostra, Epiphanius, Cyril of Jerusalem and, above all, Augustine of Hippo. Excerpted also are relevant sections of pagan anti-Manichaean sources such as Alexander of Lycopolis and Simplicius. The texts and translation are accompanied by a commentary and by detailed word indices. This volume will prove essential to all scholars of Manichaeism and of the Study of Religions.

This collection provides an analysis of the modern performance of ancient Greek drama from a theoretical perspective This exciting collection constitutes the first analysis of the modern performance of ancient Greek drama from a theoretical perspective. The last three decades have seen a remarkable revival of the performance of ancient Greek drama; some ancient plays - "Sophocles", "Oedipus", "Euripides", and "Medea" - have established a distinguished place in the international performance repertoire, and attracted eminent directors including Peter Stein, Ariane Mnouchkine, Peter Sellars, and Katie Mitchell. Staging texts first written two and a half thousand years ago, for all-male, ritualised, outdoor performance in masks in front of a pagan audience, raises quite different intellectual questions from staging any other canonical drama, including Shakespeare. But the discussion of this development in modern performance has until now received scant theoretical analysis. This book provides the solution in the form of a lively interdisciplinary dialogue, inspired by a conference held at the Archive of Performances of Greek & Roman Drama (APGRD) in Oxford, between sixteen experts in Classics, Drama, Music, Cultural History and the world of professional theatre. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of Classics and Drama alike

Afro-Greeks examines the reception of Classics in the English-speaking Caribbean, from about 1920 to the beginning of the 21st century. Emily Greenwood focuses on the ways in which Greco-Roman antiquity has been put to creative use in Anglophone Caribbean literature, and relates this regional classical tradition to the educational context, specifically the way in which Classics was taught in the colonial school curriculum. Discussions of Caribbean literature tend to assume an antagonistic relationship between Classics, which is treated as a legacy of empire, and Caribbean literature. While acknowledging the importance of this imperial context, Greenwood argues that Caribbean appropriations of Classics played an important role in formulating original, anti-colonial and anti-imperial criticism in Anglophone Caribbean fiction. Afro-Greeks reveals how, in the twentieth century, two generations of Caribbean writers, including Kamau Brathwaite, Austin Clarke, John Figueroa, C. L. R. James, V. S. Naipaul, Derek Walcott and Eric Williams, created a distinctive, regional counter-tradition of reading Greco-Roman Classics.
