The book examines conditionals in the Greek Pentateuch from the point of view of the study of translation syntax. It takes seriously into account the double character of Septuagintal Greek, both as a translation from Hebrew and as vernacular Greek. Methodologically, the underlying Hebrew is taken as the point of departure in close comparison with the resultant translation, with the purpose of examining major features in the translators? handling of this complex construction. This work is a study of the Greek Article in the Pauline Corpus, focusing especially on the letter to the Romans. The history of development as a demonstrative and relative pronoun is traced from the Mycenaean period to its occurrence in Homer and in subsequent Greek writers.

This work fills a significant need for a well-researched yet readable guide to discourse analysis. Using cross-linguistic principles and providing copious examples from both narratives and episles, Runge takes the reader from linguistic theory to practical exegetical application. Introducing a function-based approach to linguistics, Runge explores New Testament Greek grammatical conventions by focusing on the communication tasks they accomplish. His study of the ways in which words are used in texts and contexts has less to do with the specifics of speech and more to do with how humans are wired to process it. Therefore, Runge looks at how all languages operate before focusing on Greek. This examination of linguistics in general simplifies the analytical process, and explains how and why we communicate as we do. Readers will learn that discourse analysis necessarily complements today's formal approaches to linguistics, as they are simultaneously led to a more accurate description of the biblical text.

Door de vergrijzing van de bevolking en het feit dat mensen nu vaker sterven aan chronische ziekten, is de belangstelling voor levenseindezorg de jongste decennia sterk toegenomen. Tegelijk is men er zich steeds meer van bewust dat de zorg aan het levenseinde nog verre van ideaal is. Nog te vaak sterven mensen in ziekenhuizen. Ook de medicalisering van de dood wordt almaar vaker en kritischer in vraag gesteld.Vooral in Brussel is de levenseindezorg en bijgevolg ook het levenseinde minder optimaal dan elders in het land. Dit komt door sociale en demografische problemen verbonden aan een grootstad, maar ook door de organisatie van het zorgaanbod. Tot nog toe bleef de situatie in Brussel echter onbeschreven. Met Death and the City worden de omstandigheden van het levenseinde en de levenseindezorg in Brussel voor het eerst in kaart gebracht.Death and the City gaat na waar chronisch zieke Brusselaars overlijden en maakt de vergelijking met de situatie in andere Europese grootsteden. Voorts wordt de kwaliteit van het levenseinde en de organisatie van de levenseindezorg in Brussel onderzocht. Death and the City focust ten slotte op de medische besluitvorming aan het levenseinde: welke mogelijk levensverkortende medische beslissingen (inclusief euthanasie) worden genomen aan het levenseinde van Brusselse patiënten, hoe komen deze tot stand en hoe worden ze uitgevoerd. De Brusselse sociaal-demografi sche context is hierbij steeds een referentie.Het boek formuleert een aantal besluiten en opmerkelijke aanbevelingen voor beleidsmakers. Daarmee levert Death and the City niet alleen een belangrijke bijdrage tot de kennis over levenseinde(zorg), maar heeft het ook een breed maatschappelijk draagvlak.
