This book addresses energy-related issues in light of the options available to the European and Mediterranean countries. The articles attempt to identify and analyse the economic, environmental, societal and regional security issues that may emerge from those options. It is clear that a coherent energy strategy is required, addressing energy supply and demand, security of access, financial issues, market dynamics, and also taking into account the whole energy lifecycle including fuel production, transmission and distribution. In the short term, the aim should be to achieve higher energy efficiencies and increased supply from local energy sources, in particular renewable energy sources. In the long term, redesign of life styles, further increase of alternative energy sources and shift to new energy technologies and carriers is expected to contribute to solve or alleviate the problems generated by declining availability of fossil fuels. In this volume, energy experts provide background information and a detailed discussion of all these issues and strategies.

Inter-area Oscillations in Power Systems: A Nonlinear and Nonstationary Perspective deals with the development and application of advanced measurement-based signal processing techniques to the study, characterization, and control of inter-area oscillations in power systems. The material reviews recent advances in understanding, modeling and controlling system oscillations with special emphasis on the analysis and control of complex time-varying (and possibly nonlinear) power system transient processes. The book is organized into eight chapters written by leading researchers who are major contributors in this field. The authors provide techniques that explicitly address the nonlinear and nonstationary aspects of the problem. Efficient methods to generate time-varying system approximations from both measured and simulated data are proposed. Attention is also given to the vital new ideas of dynamic security assessment in real-time implementations and the development of smart, wide-area measurement and control systems incorporating FACTS technologies. Application examples include the analysis of real data collected on grids in western North America, Australia, Italy and Mexico. Inter-area Oscillations in Power Systems: A Nonlinear and Nonstationary Perspective is a comprehensive, systematic account of current analysis methods in power system oscillatory dynamics in both time and frequency domains ranging from parametric and non-parametric signal processing methods, to data-driven time-series models and statistical approaches.

The manned mission is seen as a first step towards a Mars surface exploration base-station and, later, establishing permanent settlement. The location and use of Mars’s natural resources is vital to enable cost-effective long-duration human exploration and exploitation missions as well as subsequent human colonization. Planet resources include various crust-lodged materials, a low-pressure natural atmosphere, assorted forms of utilizable energy, lower gravity than Earth’s, and ground placement advantages relative to human operability and living standards. Power resources may include using solar and wind energy, importation of nuclear reactors and the harvesting of geothermal potential. In fact, a new branch of human civilization could be established permanently on Mars in the next century. But, meantime, an inventory and proper social assessment of Mars’s prospective energy and material resources is required. This book investigates the possibilities and limitations of various systems supplying manned bases on Mars with energy and other vital resources. The book collects together recent proposals and innovative options and solutions. It is a useful source of condensed information for specialists involved in current and impending Mars-related activities and a good starting point for young researchers.

Today, the optimization of production planning processes using IT and quantitative methods is a de-facto standard in the energy industry. The energy problem is challenging and one of the most important political and economical issues in the world. Governments face the problem how to adopt the system of `Cap and Trade.' Especially, energy consuming industries, like steel, power, oil and chemical, are seriously confronted with this problem. The book offers a broad in-depth overview reflecting the requirements, possibilities and limits of mathematical optimization and, especially, stochastic optimization in the energy industry. 22 chapters with world-wide origins illuminate the mathematical requirements based on practical experiences and provide an ideal insight into the energy world -- from integration of wind energy, chain of errors in nuclear power plants and scheduling of hydroelectric power stations, over risk assessment in trading activities to various mathematical approaches.
