Abstract

Many children are admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with serious infections or with a high chance of acquiring nosocomial infection once admitted. Any infection can be serious in an immunocompromised patient, while any delay in therapy may produce more severe infection in an immunocompetent patient. The increasing numbers of PICU admissions mean that knowledge of pediatric infections is vitally important for all involved to enable them to understand the reasons for admission, risks of nosocomial infection, infection control, modes of therapy, and outcomes. Infectious Diseases in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit has brought together all the current knowledge in the diagnosis and management of infectious disease on the PICU. Taking a practical and evidence-based approach, the editor and his renowned team of contributors provide a comprehensive clinical review of the subject in one easily accessible reference work from neonatal to adolescent and immunocompromised toimmunocompetent. It is therefore relevant to all clinicians working in intensive care, including pediatricians, PICU clinicians, emergency physicians, anesthetists, adult intensivists and nursing and care-based staff.

Abstract

Hot Topics in Infection and Immunity in Children IV contains chapters based on lectures given by speakers at the “Infection and Immunity in Children” course, held in June 2006 at Keble College, Oxford. It was the fourth annual course of this name and this is the fourth book in the series as well. Together the courses and books have become important components of the training available to paediatricians with an interest in this specialty and have become increasingly popular each year. This book covers topics in infectious diseases in children and is intended for Pediatric Infectious Disease trainees, trainers, and all those who manage children with infections. Paediatric Infectious Diseases is now a recognised specialty in Europe with established training programmes and training centres, overseen by the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases. This book and the course that precedes each edition will continue to play useful parts in the development and knowledge of specialists throughout the continent and beyond.

In The Neurological Manifestations of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunodeficiency Syndromes, an authoritative, international panel of experts provide a succinct, up-to-date, evidence-based reference to the neurological consequences of infectious diseases and immunodeficiency syndromes in children in one readily accessible volume. Within each of its conveniently structured chapters, readers will find a general description of the disease or disorder, its epidemiology, etiology, clinical synopsis, neurological manifestations, diagnosis, differential diagnosis and therapy. Comprehensive yet concise, The Neurological Manifestations of Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunodeficiency Syndromes is an ideal guide for pediatricians, primary care physicians and subspecialists to the complex relationships between infectious diseases, immunodeficiency syndromes and the neurological process.
