Abstract

Based on a unique research study, this volume examines the later life development of Holocaust survivors from Israel and the U.S. Through systematic interviews, the authors -- noted researchers and clinicians -- collected data about the lives of these survivors and how they compared to peers who did not share this experience. The orientation of the book synthesizes several conceptual approaches ââ‚" gerontological and life span development, stress research, and traumatology, and also reflects the varied disciplines of the authors, spanning psychology, social work, and sociology. The result is a multi-faceted view of their subject with an understanding of the individual, society, and the interaction of the two, tempered by the authors; own Holocaust experiences. Chapters cover a range of areas including stress and coping of these survivors, reviews of their heath and mental health, an examination of their social integration, as well as a review of the multiple predictors of psychological well being and adaptation to aging. This book will be of interest to psychologists, social workers, sociologists, psychiatrists and all those who study both trauma and aging.

Abstract

Although sleep has been the subject of serious study for several decades, there has not been available an integrated, introductory text for more than ten years. Understanding Sleep and Dreaming fills this need with complete coverage of all aspects of sleep, dreaming, and sleep disorders, and is comprehensible as well as comprehensive. In accessible language, this text reviews the basic physiological mechanisms of sleep and the intertwined psychological ramifications. Most important, it is up-to-date, containing the latest information on the influence of orexin/hypocretin, nocturnal eating syndrome, the local cell theory of sleep, the effects of sleep deprivation, and the advantages of delaying school start times for teenagers. Distilling twenty five years of combined clinical, research, and teaching experience, Dr. Moorcroft has created an excellent text for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals as well as for the general reader who wants a better understanding of the sleep process and its disorders.

Abstract

In the last half century, the steadily increasing incidence of armed conflict (both within and between nations) has created mounting numbers of asylum seekers, refugees, and displaced persons. The provision of appropriate mental health services for these individuals has become a major focus of concern, but considerable controversy remains as to what kind of care is necessary. The initial assumptions and models that informed the field have recently come under attack, and alternative approaches have arisen. Forced Migration and Mental Health: Rethinking the Care of Refugees and Displaced Persons provides an up-to-date view of the controversies and future directions for the mental health care of those displaced by war or other extreme conditions. Building on the themes of cultural appropriateness and an interdisciplinary view of mental health, this book expresses the need to view refugees and others in the context of their own political and existential situations. Rather than imposing Western technological solutions on those from other cultures, it seeks to foster an understanding of the strengths of "indigenous" ways of dealing with hardship and suffering. The contributors to this volume are on the cutting edge of work in refugee mental health and represent a range of disciplines. They have striven to create cohesive chapters that reflect consistent themes as well as their knowledge of each others' work in chapters that cover such issues as assumptions for intervention, treatment models, social and political concerns, the special needs of women and children, and refugees in host countries. This book is relevant to all those working with refugees and displaced persons across the mental health disciplines of psychiatry, psychology and social work, as well as to policy makers and students in these areas.
