Jo Keroes's scope is wide: she examines the teacher as represented in fiction and film in works ranging from the twelfth-century letters of Abelard and Heloise to contemporary films such as Dangerous Minds and Educating Rita. And from the twelfth through the twentieth century, Keroes shows, the teaching encounter is essentially erotic. Tracing the roots of eros from cultural as well as psychological perspectives, Keroes defines erotic in terms broader than the merely sexual. She analyzes ways in which teachers serve as convenient figures on whom to map conflicts about gender, power, and desire. To show how portrayals of men and women differ, even in situations that are very much alike, she examines pairs of texts, using a film or a novel with a woman protagonist (Up the Down Staircase, for example) as counterpoint to one featuring a male teacher (Blackboard Jungle) or The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie balanced against Dead Poets Society.

Het oeuvre van de achttiende-eeuwse auteur Henry Fielding is doortrokken van een missie: het opvoeden van het individu. Zijn essays, romans en toneelstukken zijn allemaal verbonden door eenzelfde rode draad nl. het individu verheffen via onderwijs en opvoeding. Het debat over onderwijs, en dat voor vrouwen in het bijzonder, komt op gang in de loop van de 17e en 18e eeuw. Het hele debat hierover ligt ingebed in de heersende filosofische ideeën over natuur en cultuur van het individu. Met de daaraan verbonden probleemstelling of en hoe onderwijs en opvoeding hier al dan niet moeten/kunnen op inspelen. In een tijd waarin sommigen zich afvragen of onderwijs niet ingaat tegen de natuur van de vrouw, stelt Fielding dat er geen essentiële, natuurlijke veschillen zijn tussen mannen en vrouwen. Hij gelooft eerder in verschillen tussen individuen op vlak van intelligentie en interesse in cultuur. Vrouwen zijn, net als mannen, in staat tot intellecuele prestaties mits het nodige onderwijs. Opvattingen die nu heel evident lijken maar dat zeker niet altijd waren in de 18e eeuw.
