La construction du bâtiment de la Clore Gallery pour abriter la collection de peintures de Turner, a été l'événement le plus important de l'histoire de la Tate Gallery dans les années 1980. Les architectes James Stirling, Michael Wilford and associates en ont conçu les plans dès 1978, dans le but d'agrandir l'offre de la Tate Gallery sous forme d'un chapelet de musées très proches et offrant des services communs, tout en ayant chacun une fonction particulière. L'emplacement de cette nouvelle partie du musée retourne à son affectation voulue originellement : un lieu d'exposition de la peinture anglaise depuis l'époque élisabéthaine jusqu'à nos jours.
