Characterized as a common signaling pathway between cells, the purinergic system is capable of modulating physiological and biochemical processes. Composed of signaling molecules, regulatory enzymes, and specific receptors, this organization can modulate several basal pathways of the organism. It is understood that purinergic signaling is present in all aspects of immunity and inflammation and studies show that extracellular ATP and its adenosine metabolite are the main mediators of response. These occur since most immune cells express P2 and P1 receptors, which are sensitive to the ATP and adenosine molecules, respectively. This book describes the purinergic system and its correlation with the health and disease process.

Keratinocytes have various functions to maintain epidermal homeostasis. Many inflammatory skin diseases can develop due to suppressed or defective anti-inflammatory properties of keratinocytes. This book discusses the structural, biological, and molecular aspects of keratinocytes. Chapters discuss keratins and attachment molecules and their importance in maintaining epidermal homeostasis, skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, and aging and skin regeneration.

Cell biology is a multidisciplinary scientific field that its modern expansion in new knowledge and applications owes to important support of new technologies with the rapid development, such as ICTs. By integrating knowledge from nano-, molecular, micro-, and macroareas, it represents a strong foundation for almost all biological sciences and disciplines, as well as for biomedical research and application. This book is a compilation of inspiring reviews/original studies, which are divided into sections: New Methods in Cell Biology, Molecular and Cellular Regulatory Mechanisms, and Cellular Basis of Disease and Therapy. The book will be very useful for students and beginners to gain insight into new area, as well as for experts and scientists to find new facts and expand their scientific horizons through biological sciences and biomedicine.

The chapters in this book review the latest advances in the molecular mechanisms of autophagy, highlighting some of the most challenging research topics. The focus is mainly on how this basic cell defense mechanism comes into play in various pathologies, including liver diseases, myopathies, infectious diseases, cancers and neurodegenerative diseases. In these diseases, the contradictory autophagy roles of cell survival versus cell death emphasize the necessity of taking into account this double-edged nature in future development of already promising, autophagy- modulating, therapies.
