The man of blue landscapes describes the life and work of the Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö (1882–1956), whose career also reflected Finland’s development as a modern state. Granö was a scientific explorer, writer, a pioneer of Finnish photographic art and a professor of geography at the universities of Tartu (Estonia), Helsinki and Turku. In Estonia he applied scientific method to the study of local history and from Tartu brought the tradition of urban research. Granö spent much of his youth in Omsk in western Siberia, where his father worked as a priest among displaced and deported Finns and Estonians. From 1906 to 1916 Granö made an expedition to Mongolia and the Altai mountains, but his fieldwork remained unfinished when the 1917 revolution broke out, the area was then closed to Western scholars for 70 years. Among Granö’s most important works are the classic travel book Altai, vaellusvuosina nähtyä ja elettyä (‘The Altai, seen and experienced during my years of travel’, 1921) and his methodological masterpiece Puhdas maantiede (‘Pure geography’, 1930). In it Granö outlined a theory of landscapes, and the book was a pioneering work ahead of its time: landscape was examined in terms of the relation between human beings and their environment, as the sum of all the senses.

Climate change and increasing resource scarcity together with rising traffic volumes force us to develop new environmentally friendly and people-oriented mobility options. In order to provide a positive mobility experience, the transition from one mobility mode to another must be managed smoothly and safely, and individual, shared or public means of transportation must become convenient and easy. Conceptual as well as existing infrastructure projects provide models for future sustainable and connected mobility. This volume focuses on the importance of design, introducing through photos, plans, and brief texts over 60 groundbreaking projects from the disciplines of product design, architecture, and urban planning. With this international overview Mobility Design portrays the current situation of sustainable mobility systems, while identifying mobility as one of the most important design tasks of the future.

After the Wall came down, Berlin was faced with unprecedented city planning tasks. The partition of the city needed to be remedied, and ideas for the as-yet uncertain future needed to be developed and implemented within an extremely short time. Fifteen of the planners from East and West Berlin responsible look back on the concepts that were created, how the decision processes were organized, what conflicts were resolved (or not), and whether key decisions have stood the test of time. In interviews about this challenging period of transformation, eyewitness accounts provide a lively record of the mood during the first five years of reunification and illustrate contemporary contexts and backgrounds. Images of urban developments, some previously unpublished, offer a new perspective on the Berlin of the early nineties. With contributions by Dorothee Dubrau, Bruno Flierl, Volker Hassemer, Bernd Hunger, Urs Kohlbrenner, Ulla Luther, and others as well as photos of the city by E.-J. Ouwerkerk

Alain Badiou is perhaps the world's most significant living philosopher. In his annual seminars on major topics and pivotal figures, Badiou developed vital aspects of his thinking on a range of subjects that he would go on to explore in his influential works. In this seminar, Badiou offers a tour de force encounter with a lesser-known seventeenth-century philosopher and theologian, Nicolas Malebranche, a contemporary and peer of Spinoza and Leibniz. The seminar is at once a record of Badiou's thought at a key moment in the years before the publication of his most important work, Being and Event, and a lively interrogation of Malebranche's key text, the Treatise on Nature and Grace. Badiou develops a rigorous yet novel analysis of Malebranche's theory of grace, retracing his claims regarding the nature of creation and the relation between God and world and between God and Jesus. Through Malebranche, Badiou develops a radical concept of truth and the subject. This book renders a seemingly obscure post-Cartesian philosopher fascinating and alive, restoring him to the philosophy canon. It occupies a pivotal place in Badiou's reflections on the nature of being that demonstrates the crucial role of theology in his thinking.

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) New and cutting-edge forms of pedagogy such as distance learning, design-build, collaborative learning, and peer-to-peer practices are increasingly calling conventional teaching and learning environments, in architecture and other design disciplines, into question. Academic institutions in Western Europe, in particular, are faced with the challenge of rethinking standardized spatial structures and institutional hierarchies and adapting them to unconventional and radical teaching and learning concepts. GAM.18 explores anew the area of conflict between architecture teaching in universities and the teaching environment. It calls for spatial structures and working environments that enable the contemplation and design of architecture, and investigates teaching and learning methods that include critical consideration of the spaces and institutions in which the teaching takes place.
