"The pages of this book paint a portrait of thirteen scholars and their lifelong professional accomplishments in and contributions to teaching, service, and research in global international education around the world. Their extraordinary work contributed extensively to the development, direction and growth of the global education movement in the United States initiated by James M. Becker at Indiana University, USA, in the early 1960s. These scholars were honored with the Distinguished Global Scholar Award presented by the International Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies, the largest professional journal for social studies educators in the United States. Their narratives comprise an intriguing mosaic of backgrounds, scholarship, and contexts from which their extraordinary work blossomed in building bridges--not walls--among peoples and nations. The publication is intended to honor the professional achievements in global international education of these scholars who have devoted their lives to creating a better world through their work. More importantly, this book exposes globally-minded individuals, educators, scholars, administrators, and policymakers around the world to empowering role models from Africa, Europe, and the United States and opportunity to learn about the multitude of professional activities, teachings, partnerships, exchange programs and research in which they might engage to promote a deeper understanding about the cultural, geographic, economic, social, and technological interconnectedness of the world and its people---the very purpose of global education"--

Bridges, Pathways and Transitions: International Innovations in Widening Participation shows that widening participation initiatives and policies have had a profound impact on improving access to higher education to historically marginalized groups of students from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The research presented provides a source of inspiration to students who are navigating disadvantage to succeed in higher education against the odds. There are stories of success in difficult circumstances, revealing the resilience and determination of individuals and collectives to fight for a place in higher education to improve chances for securing social mobility for next generations. The book also reveals that more work and policy interventions are needed to further equalize the playing field between social groups. Governments need to address the entrenched structural inequalities, particularly the effects of poverty, that prevent more academically able disadvantaged students from participating in higher education on the basis of the circumstances of their birth. Across the globe, social reproduction is far more likely than social mobility because of policies and practices that continue to protect the privilege of those in the middle and top of social structures. With the gap between rich and poor widening at a rate previously unseen, we need radical policies to equalize the playing field in fundamental ways. Focuses on collaborations with schools, families, and communities Highlights tools and methods to aid in the creation of pathways, bridging initiatives into higher education Includes case studies that show how students are supported during the transition into high education systems

International Education in its International Schooling mode of operation is still an under-reported and largely under-researched area of education. However, it is undeniably no longer a peripheral player and has proven historically to be both financially successful, and commercially attractive. It subsequently continues to grow in both scale and diversity, reaching 9,000 schools in 2017. The next decade, until 2027, looks set to see unprecedented growth with the number of schools, children, staff, and fee income all doubling in size. This book explores the main driving forces behind this growth. Dr Bunnell argues that a 'New Era' of unprecedented growth still looks set to appear and explores the complex driving forces behind this expansion. He uncovers the set of inter-connected perceived 'guarantees' that are emerging, driving both the supply and demand which appears at first glance to be a very strong platform for growth. However, this work fulfils a need to get beneath the data and reveals the foundations of this enormous future growth to be rather precarious. Given its in depth insight into international schooling, this book will prove invaluable to researchers and education practitioners alike.
