Urologic cancers are an umbrella term for cancers of the prostate, kidney, bladder, penis, and testis. Routine use of advanced imaging modalities for various reasons has increased the incidental detection of some of these cancers at an early stage. Robot-assisted surgery for nephrectomy, prostatectomy, cystectomy, and retroperitoneal lymph node dissection have improved surgical outcomes of localized disease. The introduction of targeted therapies since 2006 has revolutionized the management of metastatic kidney cancer. Despite these advances, the five-year survival of patients with advanced renal cancer is still poor and we need a better understanding of the disease. The book Urologic Cancers brings together an international team of clinicians and basic scientists to provide an up-to-date overview of a wide spectrum of topics that comprise epidemiological, pathological, clinical, and biological aspects of urologic cancers. From the epidemiological spectrum, the most recent information on the epidemiology of testicular cancer and penile cancer are presented. From the clinical spectrum, the characteristics and management of divergent urothelial neoplasms, the role of surgery in the management of testicular and kidney cancer, biopsy approaches for better detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, the role of family history and germline genetics in prostate cancer disease profiling and screening, and the need for the implementation of quality assurance programs to improve prostate cancer care discussed. The biological aspects of disease mechanisms focus on various emerging molecular pathways and how these can be targeted to develop novel therapeutics. The contents of the book will be of interest to healthcare professionals, basic scientists and clinicians interested in urologic cancers.

The risk of cancer increases with age and the number of older adults seeking treatment is rising dramatically in line with the aging population. The care of older patients differs from that of younger adults because of variation in the biology of the tumor, age-related variation in host physiology, co-morbidity burden and psychosocial issues, which might impact the efficacy and side effects of cancer therapy. Management of Urological Cancers in Older People focuses on treatment strategies of urological cancers and provides guidance on the issues specific to older patients, spanning background and epidemiology, special considerations in the care of older people, therapeutics, and psychosocial considerations. This book offers a thorough review of current approaches to treating older urological cancer patients, detailing the special issues and considerations involved. The discipline-spanning coverage outlines best practice and proposes topics for future research. This first volume in the Management of Cancer in Older People series will be of interest to all surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, gerontologists, urologists and other members of the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of elderly urological cancer patients.

Clinical management of bladder cancer is challenging of the heterogeneity among bladder tumors with respect to invasion and metastasis, and frequent occurrence of new tumors in the bladder among patients treated with bladder preservation treatments. Treatment of bladder cancer spans from tumor resection and intravesical treatment, to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, radical surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. At the same time, bladder cancer is also at the forefront of biomarker development because of the ease of developing noninvasive urine tests. The features of environment-driven carcinogenesis and divergent molecular pathways in the development of low- and high-grade tumors provide a unique opportunity for advance molecular research in cancer biology. Bladder Tumors: Molecular Aspects and Clinical Management is a collection of comprehensive reviews on the state-of-the art basic science research and clinical management of bladder cancer. The book progresses from epidemiology of bladder cancer, molecular basis of bladder carcinogenesis, to standard and molecular aspects of bladder cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and also includes various treatment aspects of both non muscle invasive and muscle invasive bladder cancer. The book features: • Epidemiology, bladder carcinogenesis and divergent molecular pathways of bladder cancer development. • Pathology of bladder tumors, cystoscopy, cytology and newer techniques of bladder cancer diagnosis. • Molecular basis, efficacy and economics of diagnostic and prognostic markers for bladder cancer, with an added feature of recent inventions of molecular nomongrams. • Clinical management of low-grade and non muscle invasive bladder tumors. • Intravesical chemotherapy versus immune (BCG) therapy. • Clinical management of patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer, including neoadjuvant therapy, various aspects of cystectomy including urinary diversion and recent advances such as laproscopic cystectomy • Adjuvant chemotherapy for metastatic bladder cancer and management of upper track tumors • Non-transitional cell carcinoma tumors. The book is truly an international effort to bring the latest development in bladder cancer to the readers. The contributing authors, leaders in their respective areas of expertise-related to bladder cancer, were assembled from different parts of the world. Since the editorial team of the book consists of a translational researcher (Vinata B. Lokeshwar) and practicing urologists with expertise in clinical research (Stefan Hautmann and Axel S. Merseburger), it the Editors’ intent to promote an ongoing dialog among researchers and urologists to help reduce morbidity, mortality associated with bladder cancer, while improving the quality of life for patients.

Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma represents the first book of its kind to be dedicated solely to UTUC. Its aim is to improve understanding and eventually care of a disease that is greatly understudied and underappreciated, yet commonly dealt with by many medical and urologic oncologists. The volume features new data regarding genetic susceptibility, gene expression studies and causative factors; contemporary concepts and controversies regarding diagnosis and staging of UTUC; prediction tools and their value in treatment decisions within each disease stage andpatient selection and treatment options such as endoscopic management, distal ureterectomy, radical nephroureterectomy and chemotherapy. Up-to-date information regarding boundaries of surgical resection, indication and extent of lymphadenectomy are covered as well as the role of perioperative/neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with high-risk UTUC. Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma will be of great value to all Urologists, Medical Oncologists, and fellows in Urologic Oncology as well as upper level residents in training in Urology and Medical Oncology.

This book provides a single, comprehensive reference source that incorporates the epidemiology, natural history, and the latest genetic and molecular biological findings of bladder cancer. This book discusses the diagnostic and staging evaluation of both non-muscle invasive and invasive bladder cancer and incorporates the new findings on markers for the diagnosis of bladder cancer. Risk stratified treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer including various approaches to intravesical therapy are reviewed. Current guideline-based approaches to management and new data regarding diagnosis and prognostication of muscle invasive bladder cancer is analyzed and summarized. This book covers the application of chemotherapy for muscle invasive and advanced disease. The evidence-based application of multimodality therapy is highlighted. Gaps in current knowledge and important areas for clinical research are highlighted. Authored by experts in their respective fields, Management of Bladder Cancer: A Comprehensive Text with Clinical Scenarios serves as an easy and complete reference source for clinicians, researchers, individuals in training, allied health professionals and medical students in the fields of Urology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Basic and Translational Science and Epidemiology.

Providing a true integration of pathology with clinical management, this volume presents a practical, comprehensive text on benign and malignant disease of the adult bladder. Integrating pathology, surgical management, oncology and molecular study in a site-specific manner to include the urethra, urinary bladder, ureter and renal pelvis, The Urinary Tract: A Comprehensive Guide to Patient Diagnosis and Management is the first text in adult bladder disease to closely interweave multiple clinical disciplines into each chapter. For the majority of chapters, a pathologist and urologist or urologic oncologist are paired to provide the greatest integration of information for each disease process.
