Abstract

No one can deny the significance attributed to the issue of reconciling work and private life by contemporary society, the EU and other international organisations. Its relevance is evident in the multifaceted nature of this topic and the need for each party to the employment contract to strike a proper balance between professional and personal responsibilities, based on the assumption that people can successfully harmonise their work with life. Following on from these considerations, this volume provides a detailed analysis of work-life balance and its regulation in a number of EU countries,

Abstract

Work is, for almost all of us, an unavoidable feature of our daily lives. Whether we see it as a curse, or a blessing, what we choose to do, day in day out, shapes our attitude to the world and to ourselves. In this thought-provoking book, Lars Svendsen explores the part work plays in our search for a happy and fulfilling life. In a fascinating narrative that takes us from Marx to “McJobs”, Fordism to “funsultants”, Svendsen shows that despite our moaning, for most of us, life without work would probably fill us with despair. Not only is it generally good for our physical and mental health (burn out is more likely to come from leisure than work), it gives us a sense of purpose, an identity and a social network. For Svendsen, our frustrations with work have much to do with the way the characteristics of work and our attitudes towards it have changed over the years. Unlike previous generations, we now look to work to provide us with a sense of meaning and self-realization, we expect work to be fulfilling, fun and full of people we like. Svendsen argues that this is too much to expect from work and that it is a mistake to seek in work so much of the meaning we need in our lives. What happens when our expectations are not met? And, more crucially, what happens when they are? Are we then in danger of ignoring all those things that matter a lot more than a job? We need to consider these questions, says Svendsen, if we are to ensure that our work makes us happy. For anyone who has struggled with the work–life balance, Work is an absorbing and enlightening read that challenges us to think about our attitude to work and what it means to us.

Abstract

"To present a multi-faceted and holistic perspective of "what makes Singaporeans happy?", Tambyah, Tan and Yuen discuss the findings and insights from the 2022 Quality of Life Survey, which examines the perceptions and views of 1905 Singapore Citizens. This is the latest survey in a series of studies on the wellbeing of Singaporeans. While the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on wellbeing is a timely discussion, the findings are also compared with previous surveys conducted in 2011 and 2016 to provide a longitudinal perspective of how the wellbeing of Singaporeans have evolved over the years. Key aspects of the wellbeing of Singaporeans include life satisfaction and satisfaction with specific life domains, aspects of affective wellbeing (e.g., happiness, enjoyment and achievement), economic wellbeing, psychological flourishing, personal values, value orientations, and views on socio-political issues. Pertinent differences due to demographics such as gender, marital status, age, education and household income are also highlighted. The book also features four archetypes and clusters of Singaporeans, which are representative of the unique demographics, values, and wellbeing outcomes examined. The findings and insights will be useful to academics, policy makers, practitioners, students and the general public who are interested in understanding the life satisfaction and wellbeing of Singaporeans"-- Provided by publisher.
