"The goddess Mut, consort of Amun-Re at Thebes, is one of the goddesses known as the "Eye of Re" that include Isis, Hathor and Bastet among others. Her temple precinct in South Karnak was a major religious site from at least the early New Kingdom through the early Roman Period, yet Mut remains relatively unknown. While badly damaged, the gate in the Mut Temple's First Pylon bears important religious texts relating to the goddess and her cult as well as remains of Ramesside scenes recarved in the Ptolemaic period. This study of the gateway and its texts, edited by R.A. Fazzini and J. van Dijk, includes a description of the gateway's architecture (W.H. Peck), a detailed study of the figural decoration (R.A. Fazzini) and transcriptions, translations and analyses of the inscriptions (J.-C. Goyon, J. van Dijk, H. te Velde). Two appendices deal with the recarved Ramesside texts (J. van Dijk) and aspects of the goddess (J.-C. Goyon)."--Publisher's website.

This collection of 16 articles represents a selection of the papers delivered in the course of a seminar (1995-1996) at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and its concluding joint symposium held at the Institute and Princeton University. Wide-ranging in scope, the volume covers messianic expectations from biblical times up to modern and contemporaneous adaptations, whereby the focus lies on the messianic concept within Judaism: diversity and variety of messianic expectations in antiquity; messianic movements at the time of the Crusades and around the fifth millennium (1240); the 'Pseudo'-Messiah Sabbatai Avi in the early modern period; the philosophers Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig and Walter Benjamin with respect to their thinking about messianism as well as the Lubavitch movement. Also included are investigations on pagan Graeco-Roman writings and messianic strands in the medieval and baroque Christian context. The section on the modern period contains contributions dealing with the Ahmaddiyya movement in India, messianic currents in the socio-political culture of the Weimar Republic as well as certain messianic aspects in the very recent so-called Branch Davidian community in Waco, Texas. The broad spectrum of stimulating analyses provides a fresh re-evaluation of an apparently timeless phenomenon.

God is the story of Jesus, and Jesus is the story of the people. Jesus and the Reign of God is a powerful and compelling evocation of the vision and reality of God's reign and its possibilities for the "transfiguration of life" in faith. Song's search for a "vision of life in God," inaugurated in his previous volume, Jesus, the Crucified People, takes him from ancient Egypt and China to modern Singapore, from Gethsemane to Tiananmen Square and always pulls him back to the Gospel stories.
