"La remise en question des conséquences induites par l'étalement urbain et la dissociation fonctionnelle conduit depuis plus d'une décennie à promouvoir les stratégies territoriales visant à réorienter l'urbanisation vers l'intérieur. Basée sur une coordination accrue entre urbanisation et mobilité et sur une recherche de mixité fonctionnelle, cette approche se fonde sur un principe de densification accrue à proximité des dessertes en transports publics. Dans ce contexte, les friches urbaines représentent un potentiel particulièrement intéressant de surfaces à reconquérir. Souvent situées à des emplacements stratégiques, elles offrent l'avantage d'être déjà raccordées aux réseaux techniques et aux dessertes de transports, et représentent l'opportunité de revitaliser des portions de villes en attente de nouvelles destinées. Dans une optique de durabilité, si la densité est un enjeu incontournable, elle est à considérer comme une condition nécessaire mais pas suffisante. Dans la perspective d'une prise en compte optimisée d'aspects environnementaux, socioculturels et économiques, ce retour en ville soulève également de nombreuses questions pour le projet architectural. Le site sur lequel portent les travaux rassemblés dans le présent ouvrage constitue un champ d'investigation particulièrement adapté à l'exploration de ces multiples enjeux. Cette portion de la ville d'Yverdon-les-Bains, particulièrement emblématique des enjeux liés à la régénération urbaine, abrite actuellement de nombreux terrains en situation de friches urbaines. Il représente environ 25 hectares à réaffecter, idéalement situés entre la gare et le lac de Neuchâtel."--Page 4 de la couverture.

This book is a critiqued collection of over 200 terms regularly used to name the urban void, from the terrain vague to the buffer zone. As the landscape architect James Corner has pointed out, a void cannot be labeled because "to name it is to claim it in some way." By listing existing terms, A Glossary of Urban Voids is an attempt to name the unnamable, to define that which should have no precise definition. It records terms, names, and labels used to designate leftover spaces resulting from processes of urban abandonment that originate from some kind of obsolescence or loss. Besides obvious consequences, these processes of abandonment open up the space, liberating it from existing ideological frameworks (such as financial, capital, or cultural frameworks), allowing for divergent spatialities to emerge, and ultimately offering opportunities for the imagination and conceptualization of an alternative type of public space. Using the glossary as a theoretical tool, this book presents the most relevant questions on the issue of the urban void and its potential role as public space.
