Metal Speciation and Bioavailability in Aquatic Systems is the first comprehensive review to deal with fundamental concepts and models, speciation measurements and field applications in metal speciation and bioavailability in aquatic environments. This volume provides a thorough review of current developments concerning the interactions between trace metals and aquatic organisms. Metal Speciation and Bioavailability in Aquatic Systems provides:The first comprehensive approach to the subject covering all aspects of trace metal ecotoxicology in the environment.Essential reading for researchers and graduate students who will appreciate critical reviews of classical and modern methods of metal speciation.Contributions from leading scientists from many disciplines assessing both analytical and physical methods applied to this growing field of environmental analysis. An introduction to the use of laboratory bioassays as predictive tools for understanding trace metal organism interactions. An examination of the use and limitations of bioassays in management decisions. The interdisciplinary nature of this topic is highlighted in Metal Speciation and Bioavailability in Aquatic Systems, ensuring that this volume is invaluable for chemists, biochemists, biologists, ecologists and environmental engineers involved in the fields of metal ecotoxicology, metal speciation, environmental and analytical chemistry, and the management of trace metals in aquatic systems.

Addressing the persistent environmental threat of organic chemicals with a fresh approach to degradation and transformation processes, "Organic Chemicals in the Environment : Mechanisms of Degradation and Transformation", Second Edition, examines a wide range of compounds as well as abiotic and microbiological reactions mediated by microorganisms. The book emphasizes the pathways used and the broad classes of enzymes involved. It provides an overview of experimental procedures with detailed coverage of the organic compounds that are considered to be xenobiotics. The book begins by providing a broad perspective on abiotic and biotic reactions, including the significance of a range of environmental determinants. The following chapters briefly introduce experimental procedures and emphasize those procedures for establishing the structure of metabolites using isotopes and physical methods. Next, the authors outline details of biochemical reactions involved in the biodegradation of the major groups of aliphatic, carbocyclic aromatic, and heterocyclic compounds. They end with coverage of bioremediation that has attracted increasing concern because of the hazard presented by the disposal of unwanted chemicals or by-products from their manufacture.Broad and comprehensive, this book provides a cohesive treatment of the subject. It contains an extensive set of literature references and numerous illustrative figures. The authors use a mechanistic approach with emphasis on the pathways, and the principles that emerge provide a guide not only for specific compounds but also for those having a more remote structural resemblance.

Aquatic Toxicology publishes original scientific papers dealing with the mechanisms of toxicity in aquatic environments and the understanding of responses to toxic agents at community, species, tissue, cellular and subcellular level, including aspects of uptake, metabolism and excretion of toxicants; understanding effects of toxic substances on aquatic ecosystems; toxicant-induced alterations in organisms as evinced, for example, through biochemical and physiological reactions, including adaptive responses; the development of procedures and techniques that significantly advance the understanding of processes and events that produce toxic effects; in-depth studies of human health aspects of aquatic toxicology. Chemical and other identification of toxicants will be considered when related to the understanding of perturbations in life processes. Reports of laboratory and field investigations may be accepted; however, the findings should contribute to the understanding of processes and mechanisms.

This volume provides information that helps investigators unravel the relationships between exposure to environmental stressors (e.g., climate change, pollutants, marine litter, pathogens and biotoxins) and a range of endpoints in marine mammal species. The application of robust examination procedures and biochemical, immunological, and molecular techniques, combined with pathological examination and feeding ecology, has led to the development of health assessment methods at the individual and population levels in wild marine mammals.Provides a comprehensive, worldwide update and state of knowledge on current research and topics on marine mammal ecotoxicologyIncludes coverage of both new and emerging technologiesFeatures a multidisciplinary approach that gives readers a broad, updated overview of the threats facing marine mammals and related conservation measures
