This book is a quantitative study into the influence of the process of industrialisation on the nature and strength of family relationships in a Dutch community between 1850 and 1920. The study makes use of the unique and unusually rich source of Dutch population registers, which enables the author to trace the history of individual households. The study closely relates aspects of family and household with the social processes characteristic of an industrialising society, such as increasing rates of social and geographical mobility and the shift of production from the home into the factory. Une valeur en voie de disparition a été perçu comme un manifeste contre le travail et une prophétie annonçant le déclin de la valeur travail. Le débat qui s'est alors ouvert, auquel fut associé, notamment, Jeremv Rifkin, ne s'est depuis plus refermé. Dominique Méda y revient, quinze ans plus tard: la valeur travail s'est-elle dégradée ? Faut-il réhabiliter le travail? Est-ce la fin du travail ? Elle précise les raisons pour lesquelles le débat auquel elle invitait alors - comprendre si le travail peut ou non, en régime capitaliste, devenir une oeuvre à la fois individuelle et collective - n'a pas pu avoir lieu. Cet ouvrage démontre, en mobilisant les principaux textes philosophiques et l'histoire des idées politiques, comment le travail est devenu une valeur centrale. Il invite à remettre sur le métier la question lancinante du rôle que tiennent l'échange économique et le travail dans la fabrique du lieu social. Il propose enfin une voie pour permettre à tous les membres de la société, hommes et femmes, d'accéder non seulement au travail - un travail décent ou soutenable -, mais aussi à l'ensemble de la gamme des activités, qu'elles soient amicales, politiques, parentales ou de développement personnel, qui constituent le bien-être individuel et social.
