There are few fields of science that carbon-14 has not touched. A radioactive isotope of carbon, it stands out for its unusually long half-life. Best known for its application to estimating the age of artifacts-carbon dating-carbon-14 helped reveal new chronologies of human civilization and geological time. Everything containing carbon, the basis of all life, could be placed in time according to the clock of radioactive decay, with research applications ranging from archeology to oceanography to climatology. In Hot Carbon, John F. Marra tells the untold story of this scientific revolution. He weaves together the workings of the many disciplines that employ carbon-14 with gripping tales of the individuals who pioneered its possibilities. He describes the concrete applications of carbon-14 to the study of all the stuff of life on earth, from climate science's understanding of change over time to his own work on oceanic photosynthesis with microscopic phytoplankton. Marra's engaging narrative encompasses nuclear testing, the peopling of the Americas, elephant poaching, and the flax plants used for the linen in the Shroud of Turin. Combining colorful narrative prose with accessible explanations of fundamental science, Hot Carbon is a thought-provoking exploration of how the power of carbon-14 informs our relationship to the past.

The principles of chemical oceanography provide insight into the processes regulating the marine carbon cycle. The text offers a background in chemical oceanography and a description of how chemical elements in seawater and ocean sediments are used as tracers of physical, biological, chemical and geological processes in the ocean. The first seven chapters present basic topics of thermodynamics, isotope systematics and carbonate chemistry, and explain the influence of life on ocean chemistry and how it has evolved in the recent (glacial-interglacial) past. This is followed by topics essential to understanding the carbon cycle, including organic geochemistry, air-sea gas exchange, diffusion and reaction kinetics, the marine and atmosphere carbon cycle and diagenesis in marine sediments. Figures are available to download from www.cambridge.org/9780521833134. Ideal as a textbook for upper-level undergraduates and graduates in oceanography, environmental chemistry, geochemistry and earth science and a valuable reference for researchers in oceanography.

The results presented in this book summarize the main findings of the CARBOFOR project, which brought together 52 scientists from 14 research units to investigate the effects of future climate on the carbon cycle, the productivity and vulnerability of French forests. This book explains the current forest carbon cycle in temperate and Mediterranean climates, including the dynamics of soil carbon and the total carbon stock of French forests, based on forest inventories. It reviews and illustrates the main ground-based methods for estimating carbon stocks in tree biomass. Spatial variations in projected climate change over metropolitan France throughout the 21st century are described. The book then goes on to consider the impacts of climate change on tree phenology and forest carbon balance, evapotranspiration and production as well as their first order interaction with forest management alternatives. The impact of climate change on forest vulnerability is analysed. A similar simulation study was carried out for a range of pathogenic fungi, emphasizing the importance of both warming and precipitation changes. The consequences of climate change on the occurrence of forest fires and the forest carbon cycle in the Mediterranean zone are also considered.A valuable reference for researchers and academics, forest engineers and managers, and graduate level students in forest ecology, ecological modelling and forestry.

To date, the second edition of the Rodd's series consists of 71 volumes and over 30,000 pages. Rodd's Chemistry of Carbon Compounds is continuing with a short series of topical volumes on emerging subjects that are not covered in detail in the main volumes. The first two topical volumes will cover organic electrochemistry and asymmetric catalysis . Asymmetric synthesis initiated by metal catalysts is, of course, not a new topic and asymmetric reduction and epoxidation of alkenes, in particular, are major subject areas covered widely in the Supplements to the 2nd Edition of Rodd's Chemistry of the Carbon Compounds. However, there has been a huge increase in the use of asymmetrically catalysed reactions in other areas in the last five years or so, and this is why this subject has been specially selected to form the content of a Topical Volume. The book does not dwell at length upon topics of great importance such as Sharpless epoxidation, or upon the control of stereochemistry through catalytic reduction of double bonds. These subjects have been exhaustively surveyed elsewhere. Instead it concentrates upon those topics that appear to be 'up and coming'. Only time can tell if all will be adopted as widely and successfully as their predecessors, but it now seems clear that chemists have at their disposal an ever increasing and formidable array of methods to effect total topological control of even the most complex target molecule. This book, written by some of the best young chemists, concentrating upon work in their own subject areas, provides a snap shot of the current 'state of play' in this a key test of their scientific ingenuity. In the Cumulative Index will be found the entire contents of the 2nd edition and both of the supplements, together with a list of main titles and chapter headings for each volume. This index will enable the reader to make better and easier searches in Rodd, which is the most compact, comprehensive and accessible survey of organic c
